Cat 3126 Waterpump removal

I find myself having to do some roadside repairs on the Airstream.

Coolant pump has (I'm pretty sure) a collapsed bearing and is leaking around the shaft.
Haven't taken the belts off yet, but it seems that it should be possible to remove the fixing bolts and take the pump off without removing the radiator.

Anybody with experiences that might help???

Diesel pusher, Cat 3126 diesel with rear radiator on a Freightliner chassis

Tony, w/pump is a time consuming , slightly awkward job. But really not difficult. You may need to dis-mount the A/C compressor, and support it up about 3" ; discharging the system wasn't required , when I did mine. You will need a new by-pass hose and clamps, as well as the pump, once you have the serp belt tensioner and the w/pump belt adjuster out of the way things will be very apparent as to the rest of the removal. If you have taps on the heater hoses, close them to prevent air lock in the heater system when re-filling, you'll need to drain approx 5 gals of coolant. When transfereing fittings; compressor coolant feed a 90 degree fitting ; from the original to the replacement pump make sure you have the installation direction correct as the fittings won't turn once the pump is in place. There are 2 threaded holes in the timing gear cover for the w/p belt adjuster slide bolt , make sure you use the same one to re-mount the adjuster as when you removed it , or the belt won't tighten.
Those were my 2 mistakes. Good luck.

Thanks Skip. After looking long and hard, I decided to remove the radiator and do it the right way. Spent the afternoon removing all the radiator piping and fixings after a local mechanic turned up who reckons he can get the parts on Monday. Well, at least that's what I think he was saying. A common language would be nice but we are both pretty good at miming so I think we have it all sorted out.
So bright and early tomorrow - if I can get out of bed with all the aches and pains I'm feeling now - we will lift the radiators out and do things the easy way
