Cat 3126E Fuel mileage

Just completed my second trip to sunny Florida in my 2001.5 Discovery powered with a 3126E Cat. With this trip I now have some comparison info which I found interesting. Last years trip to the same destination produced 9.87 MPG, 122 gal. of diesel. Water and waste tanks were empty and average speed was 65/68 mph. This year I loaded 90 gal. water and purposely maintained a speed of 60 mph for the entire trip. The reduced speed, over 1100 miles, produced 10.10 mpg with only 107 gallons of diesel consumed. The slower speed definately paid off in less fuel used. This years fuel cost was within several dollars of the previous year. Looks like the reports regarding reduced speeds reducing overall fuel consumptions have some merit.

The actual numbers made a believer out of me There was a added benefit of traveling at 60mph. At that pace, traffic entering the interstate had ample time to merge without me constantly having to slow the bus. Had the exhaust brake set and that avoided the need for applying the brakes. What was really noticable was I usually caught up with traffic that passed me doing 65/70. The steady pace in, the right lane, was relaxing
