What kind of mileage can I expect with a 2004 Fleetwood Discovery 39'? It has the 330 Cat with a Allison 6 speed (I think). I currently average about 7.2 with my V10 but am considering moving to a DP due to ride quality, cabin noise and power.

I wouldn't expect much more than 8 with that combination. We had the 300 in our 2000 DSDP 39'. To me, here on the west coast it was underpowered for the weight and was part of the reason for getting the 2002 DSDP we now have. JMHO though as even with the 350/1050 ISC I added a Banks kit to it! Still getting 8 with it not towing the toad and holding 70 plus spurts up to 80.

Had the same cat in a 2003 excursion. Depends on your toad. You can expect 8 to 10. Very good reliable engine. Be sure to clean radiator and cac and update all maintenance.

Make the move for the better ride, less noise and more power. Don't expect an earth shaking increase in fuel mileage. If you have increase, hey great! If not, you still have better ride, less noise and more power.

I get anywhere from 7 to 9 , depends on so many factors. The big difference is the power and the pull you have with the diesel. I pull a 2007 Saturn Ion where ever I go so it depends a lot on weather and how heavy you pull. Hope this helps a little.

Expect 7 MPG with a toad, and if you get more you'll be happy. I am convinced that the mileage is close to the same on most 40 footers regardless of engine size. There are so many variables you'll get a brain cramp trying to figure it out. I have heard some guys say they get 8 to 10 MPG, don't believe it it is not going to happen. Just hop in and go have fun......

As I stated, I am getting 7.2 with my gas V10 towing a Volkswagen Jetta at about 60mph on the interstate. If I am not going to get better mileage with the diesel, is the ride quality and noise level THAT much better, especially for the difference in price between my gas rig and a DP?

Hello to all

I have owned both a gas and now a Diesel pusher, and in my humble opinion the diesel is a far better ride, more power, and less noise. Air bags are a great improvement over springs and provide better handling.

Prices for used DP are falling... Shop...Shop... and shop some more... And Yes the handling, noice, ride are worth a few thousand bucks... If you compare a 4 or 5 year old DP with 30,000 miles to a 2 or 3 year old gas with 10,000 miles ( the age and mileage are for a point of reference not exact) the prices will be comparable... The lifetime average for mine is 7.8 mpg. That's over 30K miles around the USA - not adjusted for generator use. Sometimes mileage checks at fill ups would be 9.5 and sometimes 6.9 but most were upper 7's. This is my third diesel and very doubtful I'd ever go back to a gas motor home.

You will be getting much more then just a engine upgrade from your Bounder.
Air bag ride, air brakes, exhaust brake more lb ft toque. Bigger refrigerator etc
More standard upgrade coach items are included with a Discovery.

In our Winnebago Ultimate 2000, 330 Cat.With next size larger Truck X green line tire 100 lbs air pressure. Tow car, .. I found by taking the RV tires off and Putting The 275x 22.5 Truck tire with 100lbs IT went up to 10. MPG.. At 65 MPH. Some will dissagree about the firm ride . That is OK.By me. It works for me;

My mileage was all over the place, from 6 to 8,and didn't seem to matter whether I was towing or not.I had a minor matter to be taken care of,so I took it to a CAT dealer and had him pull the records.Lo and behold, the average mpg for the 80+K was 7.4 on the road and 7.6 when figgering total hours. It was amazing all the information that is stored in that computer....Average speed for the life of the rig, highest speed (that must have been at Freightliner,115.) idling time and a whole bunch of other things.
I am very happy with my DP and wouldn't change back to the TV and TT we have had. Well,I did love my PSD Excursion and the 10.3 mpg towing it got.Gee whiz I miss that rig.

What do you plan on doing with it? If you travel all the time then a diesel would be better, but not necessary.
If you're going to snow bird and sit for six months then a gasser would work just fine.
We bought ours to travel in, after 10 years we still haven't made it full time.
Our last gas rig was a '98 Santara 35' with 460 and Banks kit. Mileage was 5.0 to 6.5 no matter what.
With the 41' DSDP (also with a Banks) we're getting 8.0 at 70 mph not towing. We'll never save enough on fuel to pay the difference but the less noise, ease of handling and air ride is worth it if you can swing it $$ wise.
