I had a similar incident. I found the 4" clamp between the turbo-charger and the exhaust pipe had a small 1/2" split in it. It was very hard to see from the bottom. I found it thru the rear floor access to the top of the motor. After replacement, no more smell or soot leaking into coach. Hope this helps.

c9 deisel smell

I DID FIND A PIN HOLE LEAK at the weld joint of the turbocharger, but I did not think that would be large enough to cause the problem. cat wants $3,500 for the turbo plus 8hr labor. thanks for your help I will check further on this .

At turbo pressures, a pin hole can produce a lot of gas. I assume that the leak is on the pressure side of the turbo so,it may be a weldament flaw. If that is indeed the source of the fumes, then there is an old school solution to such a problem. I had a friend that used to weld pressurized gas pipe lines for a living. Get the drift?

There is also another possible fix, particularly if the pin hole is in the cast iron of the turbo housing. If you have access and have the tools , drill the pin hole out to a size where you can tap threads and install a pipe plug. Use magnets and a shop vac, while drilling & taping, to collect ALL the metal material.
laurel; you describe a weld joint turbo housing should be all cast iron on the exhaust side, if you see welds then it's possible there has been a previous attempt at a repair and drilling would not work. Weld would be harder than drill bits. Can you post a picture ?
