Cat engine

I have 2004winnabego journey freight liner chassis,330 (3126) cat engine while driving engine drops too idle, can't use throttle,it doesn't respond when pressed, have to pull over, shut off engine, restarts instantly and everything works great till it happens again, seems to be 1 -2 hrs driving time, all engine gauges seem ok normal water temp. , oil pressure, had cat dealer check, they thought low voltage issue and tightened and repaired loose connections, but problem still exists
pretty spooky, trying to get out of traffic to get restarted can be scary
Anyone had this kind of problem, how resolved ?

I would suspect throttle position sensor. Not very pricey and easy to change. Might have cat or FL hook it up to a scanner and check it out, as its a drive by wire, computer controlled engine. Might have thrown a code or two.

We did have this same problem on a peterbilt with a cat engine. Driver changed the throttle position sensor and no problems for over two years now. Had the same thing on a Mack truck years ago and it's still going strong.

I had this happen once down town Atlanta and just like you stated no power from the throttle - I just happen to think to engage the cruise control and the engine regained power. I did find a place to pull over outside of the city but everything functioned normal and it has not happen again.

Coolant level switch in the cooling tank can cause the engine to drop to low rpm.

Sure have, Bought my MH in North Carolina I live in Washington. Each time I came to a hill it would derate. That is what your engine is doing. It will keep running but only at 45 MPH or less. As soon as you turn it off and restart it will run OK until the next time. It is setting a ECM code each time it does this. So long as it does not not get worse it will not shut down completely. It does have some codes that will shut down the engine right in the middle of traffic. I think lack of any oil pressure will shut it down completely.

Mine was setting injector failures. But I have never replaced the injector pump or the injectors. But the code was correct.

My coach was a repo. The first owner did not understand english. I would bet it would make no difference whether written or spoken.

You need to first pull the codes from the ECM. You can normally do this with the cruise control. You will need Cat publication SEBU7011-09 Dated March 2001.

Back to my injector problem, I changed the engine oil three times within 500 miles along with a new engine oil filter each time. Along with this I changed the fuel filter each time. Never had a code return and the engine runs great.

The bad engine oil and a pluged fuel filter were setting a injector code. The ECM could not tell a pluged filter and old engine oil from a pluged injector. All the ECM knew was that the exhaust was lean, so it set a bad injector code.

Hope this helps. Otto Diesel would be impressed with what Cat has done with his engine.

My 2004 National Tropi Cal with a Cat 350 did the same thing. Replace the throttle position sensor which is located under the accelerator pedal. Sat in San Jacinto Ca for three days waiting for a Cat tech with a computer to verify the problem so the shop would order the parts. Paid $350 for him to drive over from LA to verify. Then waited another day for parts to arrive. Thirty minutes to replace part.
