Assuming that I have a CAT ET Communication Adapter and Software do I need any passcodes or other "keys" to make it work on a Windows XP lap-top computer? The CAT ET would be the kit P/N 171-4400 or 7X1700? Any information would be appreciated. Engine is 3126B, 1998-99 vintage.

I have had The Caterpillar ET for about five years and found that it is very useful. It will read what ever data your engine computer will output. Mine was originally the operator's version but it provided a great deal of info. Cat opened up the software without a pass code when they stopped sales and distribution of the the Cat ET several years ago. If you have the software, run it on a palm pilot, and have the connection cord, you can go to the Caterpillar site and download the technician fleet version which I now have done. It will not only give you all engine data, but will allow for some minor programing. I have used it to "latch" my exhaust brake so that it will come on when the brake pedal is activated while my cruise control is engaged. Nice little option. I really like mine and keep it running most of the time. So to answer your question. You do not need a password to use the device. As to running it on a laptop, I do not know as mine was designed to run on a palm pilot.

I'm interested in this software for my 2005 C7. I did a little looking around the Internet and it appears to be a special data cable and computer software, correct? Do you know where the best place to purchase this and what the cost would be?
Thanks John

After rereading the original inquiry and my answer, I need to clarify. I have a product that was put out by Caterpillar called the Cat Pocket Technician. It is software, a cable that hooks to the computer port under the dash (which is fed by the engine computer) and a docking port where a "palm pilot" is used. This device is no longer distributed by Caterpillar but the Caterpillar software has now been opened up and available to use. It was originally distributed in two forms: 1. For the operator and 2. for fleet use. I started with the operator form and then when the software was opened up, I downloaded the fleet version which reads more data and allows for some minor programing.
Sorry If I confused the issue. I do understand that a newer software now exits for use on a lap top. Probably the same used by cat technicians but certainly much more expensive than the device I have. I think I bought mine on ebay but don't recall any price. Silverleaf does the same thing but with a few different data screens, on a PC, doesn't have any programing features. is more available and has good factory support.

I have a 1999 Tradewinds with the cat 3126B. Where is the plug to access the engine information? Thanks, Bryan

The data port on my 2005 TS envoy with a spartan mountain master chassis is located under the dash and to the left of the steering column.

I have the same MOHO and the data port is located as described above. However, I also have a second data port (high on the engine block, passenger side next to the valve cover) in case you can't find a connection under the dash. Good luck.

Would you happen to have the link for the software? I have not been able to locate it.

Pat, this is the cat site that has some info on the discontinued pocket tec
Cat Products: Products>Electronics>Pocket TecTM
1. You can download the software from Cat to your computer
2. Download this software from your computer to the palm pilot using the palm software
3. Using the Cat Palm Pilot dock and the cat connection cable--hook up the palm pilot and you are in business.
I have an original Cat Palm Pilot dock and cable, so mine is pretty straight forward. I do think that with some electronic skill one could take a simple palm pilot dock and re wire it to work with one of the cat cables. Probably would have to use an original cat docking device to copy.
Anyway, the above cat site might answer some of your questions. Jim

Pat, believe the caterpillar pocket tec software will only work on a palm pilot as that was the original configuration. As to what someone could adapt ????
