Gents,
This has most likely been asked before but, in my searches, I've not found a definitive answer. A local ad here in San Diego for a Safari Cheetah for sale claims he's got the 330 CAT in it and a "true Jake Brake" in it. I was under the impression that the C-7s never came with the Jake. Now, I know and realize the difference between the "exhaust" brake and the Jake brake so, no explanation of the two is necessary. But, what I'm wondering is, either CAT or Cummins, what's the smallest of each, that one could actually have a "JACOBS ENGINE BRAKE" installed in/on?
Is there a post, thread, article, write up, anything that is in print that states which coaches or better yet, which engines in RVs could come with a true Jake brake?
Scott

C-9 CAT
ISL Cummins
Although there are some people that have added them later to the smaller engines.

Jacobs makes both engine compression and exhaust brakes and some folks call them both Jake brakes, which is technically correct.
However, the purists would only consider an engine compression brake as a "true" Jake brake.

X2 Sounds like you know the difference but the seller may not. Ask them is it has a high and a low setting. Only a compression braking system will have this.

And the newer Cummins ISL have a Variable Geometry Turbo that is actually used for the engine brake which is 30% more effective than a standard exhaust brake, per Cummins phone call. I looked hard for a Pac Brake to lube per my manual and found my manual had not been updated for the new version. The brake is quiet and really slows the mh down. The new turbo has better low rpm performance as well.

Gents,
Thanks for the answers here. But, still no definitive "written" page, statement, brochure, etc that states or stated: These CAT engines may or may not be, or can or cannot be, or Cummins, may or may not be, or can or cannot be, out fitted with the "Jacobs COMPRESSION Brake".
As stated, I know what an "exhaust brake" is so that's not the point.
Certainly not trying to be a pain here but, just looking for "proof" for myself and future reference. By the way, I'm not the one looking at the coach in question, a friend of mine is and he sent the ad to me and that's what stated in the ad. But, if someone can direct me to a site or ? that is informative on the subject, I'd be grateful.

For example, I don't believe all Cummins ISLs came with Jake brakes at a certain date.
Many times, the coach/chassis manufacturer specs Jake or no Jake, so I don't think there is a hard and fast rule for older rigs and possible newer rigs also.
In the RV world, the only thing consistent is the inconsistency. In many cases, equipment must be verified by examining the rig in question.

Call Cummins directly. With the engine number they can tell you what is on that engine. As for the 400ISL and many many other Cummins you can order the actual Jake engine brake as an option. They were very helpful explaining how my engine brake works. I remember cummins 330's, 350's etc with Jake brakes many years ago.

I'm a bit late adding to this thread, but perhaps better late than never. Caterpillar seems to make their own engine retarder brake, they don't seem to use Jacobs Vehicle Systems version. The real question is not "Jake Brake vs Exhaust Brake", it is "Engine Retarder Brake vs Exhaust Brake". As can be seen on the linked C7 brochure, Caterpillar did offer a "Cat Engine Brake" on the C7, I don't know how you can tell from the coach (however if it has a two stage it is an engine brake as a previous poster pointed out), but if you have the SN for the engine, Cat will tell you.
