I have read on other forums that pre 2007 Cummins engines have had problems with lift pumps and O-rings due to ULSD. They are recomending a lubricity enhancer for the early engines. I have not heard of any bad reactions of this fuel on Cat engines (yet) and when I spoke to a Cat rep. at a rally he said that the oil companies are using different additives for lubricity. How have you fellow Cat owners been doing on ULSD? Marty

I have not had any problems with my MH's CAT engine or our two heavy trucks with CATs. All of them are 2000 model year or older. We did have a lift pump go out, resently, on our 2000 Cummins ISC route truck. The Cummins engines require a new style lift pump gasket when replacing a lift pump. I don't know if someone should replace the gasket before the pump starts leaking or just wait until it does. I waited due to the large amount of miles on the truck.

Thank you Garbageman and historyljc for your replies. It seems that ULSD doesn't effect the Cat as it does the Cummins. I have had a total of three replies to my inquiry and none of us (so far) have had any ill effects. Hope it stays that way. I am hoping from the lack of response to the question means lack of problem.
Thanks again, Marty

Back before ULSD at the suggestion of my trucker friends I have been using Power Systems products (e.g. Diesel Kleen) for fuel stabilization and better performance. It just happens their products have had a lubricity compound they call Slik-Diesel and after ULSD become the norm it made their products quite popular.

My CAT service tech told me last year if there is going to be a ULSD problem on a CAT engine the most likely candidate would be the injectors since they specifically depend on the fuel for lubrication.

The pumping stations ( not gas stations) add a lubricity to the diesel fuel to make up for the loss of lubricity when the sulphur is removed. Not sure what happens in Mexico. Some rubber hoses or some seals on the older Cummins had problem with the rubber deteriorating. Cat does not have this problem. No problems with my C7.

It's good to know that the Cat engine is not suffering any problems like the Cummins engine has using ULSD. From the replies I have recieved on this subject it seems that we don't need to put in any additives to the fuel.
Thanks for all the replies. Marty

As far as I know we have only used ULSD in our 01 330 cat (sorry don't know the numbers) in the 2 yrs we have had it. No problems yet. Hopefully never.
