Check Engine Light

I have recently had my 2009 Safari Cheetah 42 PAQ CAT C9 400 HP engine serviced. I have taken it out twice since the service and each time the (yellow) "check engine" light comes on after approximately 5 to 10 minutes. It resets each time the engine is turned off. I could take it back in for service, but I am a great deal of distance to the nearest dealership. I assume it is probably a faulty sensor. My real question is, "does the engine sense the check engine light and lower it's overall performance as a safety measure"?

Even if it is a code that will cause it to derate, it does it over time usually. The check engine light fir 'failure to ignite ' will eventually create, but usually 50 to 100 miles.
I really think it is dependent on what the code is. If it relates to overtemp, it would derate much sooner.
On my 2008 Beaver, I can see the codes through the dash control panel (then Google the code).

Cheapest and easiest thing to do now is check the coolant level. A low level will give a check engine light

After reading some of the responses, I was able to go to my motorhome and test the diagnostics as recommended. In all cases the diagnostics read "No Active Fault".

Since the Check Engine Light only comes on when it is driven under a load for more than 5 or 10 minutes (not the same each time) I will wait until the light goes on and then check diagnostics once the light comes on. In hopes that there will be a code. I also thought the light might relate to speed so I made certain not to exceed 60 MPH but as with each other time the light came back on.

Can I assume since there is no history of fault in the diagnostics that the check engine light is not something significant?

Next time you get an engine check code, leave the engine running while engine check code is lit and put the transmission in neutral, then check for code.


If I turn my coach engine off and then start it again to check for engine codes and the engine check light is out, no faults will appear. Cat can read the code with their equipment, but my on board system will only read a code if engine check light is active.

you know i read this and the advice on the coolant. Mine tells me if the coolant is low and i would think on 09 would as well.
