My 330 3126E seems unusually reluctant to start when the weather gets cool. On my recent trip, the temp dropped overnite to low 50's and next AM I had trouble getting the engine to start. I did not get the 'wait to start' light on the dash. I've had this problem twice before. The engine cranks, sputters and belches lot's of smoke but won't run. I finally got the thing started but, from that point on, I would use the block heater in the mornings while running the generator to make coffee.
Otherwise, the CAT runs fine. I am using Power Service engine treatment every 2nd or 3rd tank of fuel.
Any ideas, suggestions??

smlranger, We had the same problem when our 02 Journey was new. The hard starting occured at high altitude and at cool temperatures. I took it back to Cat and complained, they said it was a known problem. The solution was to reprogram the ECM. Problem gone. The fact that you have no wait to start light on the dash may indicate that you have a different possibly electrical problem.
Good luck, Bob

Just a thought but what ever is making the "wait to start" not come on might also be making the system think it is much warmer outside than it is.

If you have a CAT dealer near by stop by and ask them how to ck the glow plugs. If cking them is to much of a task, ask them how much will it be for them to ck them. I believe the use a volt meter to ck current flow.

I think the 3126e only has a heater in the intake instead of glow plugs.

Gary, just attended Camp Freightliner last month and Mike said no glow plugs. All Cats have intake heaters that draw 220 DC Amps so check connections first which I know based on your previous posts you are more than capable of doing. He also said that if your batteries are not in good condition the intake heater can pull the battery down in short order.

I'd be following the lack of the "wait to start" lamp. My guess is that you may have a problem with either the sensor or the computer - causing it to never try to pre-heat.

I do get the 'Wait to Start' light when the temps get cold...not sure what the temp threshold is for that feature to activate. I would think the low to mid 50's overnight would not trigger the need for preheat.
I'm going to be checking with the local CAT shop unless I wait until I can get to Gaffney next March.

Some conflicting info I think. One post says no wait to start and then another states it is working. In any case, it is not uncommon for the wait to start to come on at what you would think is a warm temp( like 50 -- mine will come on at 50 )just wait for the light to go out and it sometimes will seem like a long time. Glow plug engines are usually quicker to be ready to start. I use my block heater any time I can. I not only helps the start but speeds up the warm up.

I use mine anytime it's going to drop below about 50?. Makes a big, big difference on ease of starting.

My 02 3126E starts hard also when temps get in the 50's but the block heater does the trick..
FYI...The air inlet heater should activate (wait to start light) when the total of the air temp and the coolant temp is less than 109 degrees F...In other words if the air temp is 55 and the coolant temp is 50 it should activate...The block heater heats the coolant so keep that in mind if your thinking the inlet heater should be activating..
Also it is normal for it to cycle on and off when the engine is running until a temp combination of 127D is met...This info is for 3126B and E engines and not sure about others...The info should be in your Cat Operation and Maintenance manual...
