Convert to 2 fuel filters
2003 Freightliner chassis, 330 hp Cat 3126. Single fuel filter. Want to change to a 2 filter system, 10 and 2 micron filters. Would also like to install primer pump at the same time. Looking for part numbers, cost and photos would be a plus. Thanks.

This one has a primer pump as part of the filter head.

This is for Brett Wolfe. I have ordered the parts for the second fuel filter with a primer pump and will pick it up later this week. My question is why do I have to place the new filter after the transfer pump? Will something bad happen if I add it right after the first filter? Just curious.

I'm not Brett, but the idea is to remove all the air from the lines after you replace the filters. If you place the pump on the first (primary) filter you will only remove the air from that filter back to the tank. If you install it on the secondary filter (the one closet to the engine) this will remove the air from BOTH filters and the associated lines. Hope this answers your ????.

Thanks, Lou but I think you miss understood my question. The primer pump would be on the second fuel filter but in Brett's write up he states that the first filter is between the fuel tank and the transfer pump and the second is between the transfer pump and the fuel rail. I just want to put them both between the fuel tank and the transfer pump.

I understand. If he doesn't see this thread I'd send him a PM because I have found him always eager to help.

Mike and Pat, I had the same question. Since I already had two filters I was going to just add another 2 micron filter beside the 30 micron filter in the back. In my feeble mine I thought the 2 micron filter on the engine would never get clogged since the fuel was already run through a 2 micron filter and I would never have to change the one on the engine. I was told that it wouldnt work. Why I dont know.

I believe it is too hard for the fuel pump to suck though two filters, especially the second being a fine 2 micron. The pump is much more efficient and less likely to experience cavitation pushing the fuel through the secondary filter.

That might be true, but when there is only one filter on a Cat it it to be a 2 micron filter so shouldn't that be the same thing?

The link to Brett's post is 8 years old. Since then Freightliner started to install a 2 filter system. Brett is the expert in these matters but FL wants you to have one 2 micron and one 30micron filter. According to FL tech 10 micron might plug too often. One also has to be carefull when buying fuel filters. Many of the crossovers will get you the correct size, shape and gasket but the micron rating is different. Some filter mfrs. use a different method to state their micron rating. Way beyond my technical knowledge but has to do with percentage of particles that are stopped and 2 different methods for stating the micron rating. Maybe a filter engineer can provide further info on this subject.

Anything new on this post, if you can add it before the transfer pump?

I had one fuel filter clog a few years ago and had a pretty simple solution. I just purchased another filter head at NAPA, I believe it was 3/4 NPT, but it was so long ago I'm not sure. But it was a pretty simple install, a short piece of pipe to connect the filter heads and I modified the bracket to support the additional filter head. Modifying the bracket may not be necessary, but I always try to do a good job. I have used this setup for 30,000 miles without issues. The filters I have on there are fleetguard FS1022, 10 micron separator and FF5319 2 micron high efficiency. I use the fleetguard filters because they are all over ebay rather cheap and they are good quality. I still don't have a priming pump, but this is a simple solution to the filter problem. The coach is a 2003 Fleetwood Discovery, Freightliner XC Chassis.
