Don't think DEF was required on most until 2010 or later.

http://www.cumminsfiltration.com/pdf...es/MB10033.pdf This link will better explain SCR systems that use DEF. I don't believe your coach uses DEF and never ever add DEF to diesel fuel. DEF is injected into the exhaust system to reduce pollutants. When the US Government mandated these emission reductions, Caterpillar dropped out of the over the road Diesel engine business.

Exactly.
If you had it, you would know it.

Yep! You have a separate tank for DEF and a gauge on your dash to show fluid level.

Caterpillar's approach to emissions requirements was to introduce the ACERT engine series. Advanced Combustion Emissions Reduction Technology. For some CAT engine models it can be seen as compound turbochargers, a low pressure stage feeding a high pressure stage plus variable valve timing. All to get more air into the cylinders. It is a complicated system, hence they dropped out of the on-highway market a few years ago. CAT has never used EGR, exhaust gas recirculation like Cummins and others.
Diesel exhaust fluid is 32.5% urea in ultra pure water. The urea solution is sprayed into the exhaust ahead of the catalyst to break convert oxides of nitrogen into less invasive components. It is currently, the most popular method of meeting US EPA emission requirements.

Is this method used in pick-up truck engines, Dodge, GM, or Ford?

I have been considering a new PU with Diesel power, sounds like a pain.
What is the expense?

If you fill up at a truck stop that has DEF at the pump, it is around $2.80/gal. If you buy it in 2.5 gal containers, it is about $12-$13 for that.

I've got a 2012 Silverado 3500 that requires DEF. it uses about 2 1/2 gal every 4 to 5 thousand miles. Each 2 1/2 gal container is about $13 depending where you buy. The pain is keeping it on hand. I always carry at least one in case I'm out somewhere that it's not easy to find. The warning system on this vehicle is not the best. Seems to warn when 500 miles are left but after that warning to mile left seem to go down faster than the actual mileage. You just need to learn the quirks of whatever vehicle you buy.

Lauren, Cat has not made a EPA engine in years, so the DEF. is sure not required on antique engines.
