Diesel Exhaust

I pull a boat with a expedition 38, 2006. Has anyone had a problem with exhaust causing grey black soot getting all over the boat interior to the point it has to be washed before using it after about four hours of pulling the boat to destination? I questioned my mechanic who services r.v. and trucks and he hadn't heard of this problem. It's from the exhaust pipe, and not the breather pipe. Thanks for any advise, Tim.

See our signature pic...that's a 30' Express Cruiser.
We most usually tow it with a '03 Dodge 3500 w/Cummins 5.9...has a straight 5" exhaust.

The rear fender of the truck and front starboard side of the boat's hull would get soot deposited on every trip (boat interior is too high to be impacted). This from a Diesel that passes bi-annual SMOG inspections.

Our fix was a exhaust tip that pointed the exhaust down against the roadway...totally ended the issue.

If your exhaust is like ours was (not directed away from the boat) it's just the nature of the pre-DPF/DEF Diesels.

Best luck

The DPF stands for Diesel Particulate Filter. In other words the exhaust has a filter to catch the particulates (soot). The diesels that don't have the filter can emit some smoke (soot). The DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) is for helping to control the amount of harmful emissions exiting the tail pipe.

I, too tow a boat, 21' open bow, and have never had any exhaust soot in or on the hull of the boat (my ISL370 is pre DPF/DEf). The exhaust tip on my coach is pointed down and out so the exhaust shoots out to the side of the roadway.

Yeah mine was down and out as well. I had it turned straight down now, so we'll see next trip how it works out. Thanks, Tim.
