Diesel newbie maint. questions?
I just bought my first DP MH. Its an o4 winne journey with the 3126B cat engine and I just wanted to get some your opinions. Does anybody strictly buy the CAT filters or are the local autoparts one good enough? How many fuel filters are there? What about different brands of oil? I just want to try and take care of this engine the best I can and plan on doing as much of the maintenance I can do myself. Does anyone happen to have any part numbers they can share.

Any name brand filter is good, the oil needs to be the diesel rated oil in the right viscosity for your engine. I think yours is 15w-40, which is a very common diesel oil. Oil brand is what makes you happy, the oils on the shelf should all meet your specs; and synthetic vs dino is another personal choice.
The best you can do is get around the engine: up/down/under/over/side and try to identify all the filters and their locations. If you can write the numbers down.

When I can, I use CAT filters.....order them from the Internet. Cheap enough. TWO fuel filters., big one w/water separator and a smaller one mounted on the front of the engine next to the primer pump. !0W-30 oil, Shell Rotella. Rook

I agree 100%, the original Cat secondary fuel filter had been moved because of engine height issues , in my coach. So unfortunately unless your talking to someone with the EXACT same coach and floor plan some fuel filters may be re-located. If in doubt , of any item take pictures and post them with your questions.

After market fuel filters often don't measure up to CAT standards. They may cause fuel injector issues. Worth it to me to use CAT filters.

If you can see your existing filters you ought to be able to read some numbers off of them. Even if they're not CAT filters you ought to be able to Google the cross-reference. There are usually two filters, a primary, which is a coarse filter usually combined with a water separator, and a secondary which is the fine filter. I try to use CAT filters especially for the secondary.

I have been an ASE Master Tech for 40 years so I feel I have a lot of good experience and advice. Always buy CAT filters for your engine. They aren't much more than the cheap ones and you are replacing it maybe once a year. As for the oil, I use Rotella 15/40 conventional although I may switch to synthetic. Depends on my next oil analysis.

Never skimp on filters nor oil! You don't have to use the highest cost oil and the factory filters work just fine.
I always buy the OEM filters and use DELO 15w40 since it meets Cummins and CAT specifications.

Filters
With my CAT C7, my first fuel filter change, I purchased a Baldwin filter at the suggestion of a mechanic on my job site who worked on all of the CAT equipment. They used them all of the time. I compared the sealing gasket of the CAT and Baldwin filter and the CAT seal was much wider than the Baldwin, more sealing surface. I stayed withe the CAT filter. Our thought was it would be okay when the filter is on a scraper or excavator in the wide open and a leak could be seen, but possibly the driver of the diesel pusher would be the last to know of a fuel leak and fire at the rear of the coach. CAT fuel filters for me.

Rotella 15/40 and CAT filters you wont go wrong. Synthetic, yes a personal choice and is what I use in all my other vehicles, have for years without an issue. Make sure your hand operated fuel pump works and you know how to use it if you have one.
Be sure to get the numbers from all your belts and hoses also for future needs.

I've read a couple are sending oil samples in for analysis. Is that a must do or just something to make you feel better? I probably will only be changing oil and filters once a year on this since I'm not sure if I'll hit the mileage to change

No, it's not a "must do" but if you're going to go a number of years on your Transynd between changes then it is recommended. Because I change the oil every year and our mileage is <10k/year I'm not too concerned about the oil analysis. Also, I am running Extended Life Coolant so there is no SCA monitoring. But at $25-30/sample sampling is relatively cheap insurance that can tip you off to more serious problems before the symptoms are noticed.

Where can I find the serial number for this engine? The previous owner used many different brands of filters, I like buying mine all from one place
