Engine Temp 194 at all times?

I've got a 1999 Cat C-10 with the caterpillar engine monitor system and VMSpc as well. Both systems read a coolant temp of 194 at all times. I just bought the coach so I don't know how long this has been going on.

I'm wondering where the sensor that the ECM uses to detect water jacket temperature is. This sensor should be different than the sending unit for the dash gauge which reads 230 degrees most of the time and is an analogue gauge.

I don't know where the water temp sensor, (or sensors), are located on a Cat C-10 but I can tell you that a 194 degree water temperature is not unusual for my Cat 3126.
And that most analogue gauges are unreliable, (when compared to the accuracy of a VMSpc).

ok lets start with ( VMSpc ) what is that ? second, if your gauge is right, 194 is perfect thats what my 3126b runs at, and I use a scan gauge D

ok answered my first question with this >>> VMSpc | SilverLeaf Electronics, Inc., now this just brings up more questions, are you using your lap top screen to display that information, BTW very impressive but looks to be a bit out of my tenco league

Yes I use a laptop sitting on the dash to display information. Very informative and useful.

I've learned that the 194 degree display on the Cat Engine monitor and on VMSpc signifies a default condition from the ECM. 194 degrees is the default reading produced by the ECM when it can't see the coolant sensor; either because it has failed, or shorted, or open. So I've contacted the local Cat dealer to get a replacement; then I'll locate where it is on the engine and replace it. Of course it could just be unplugged, too I suppose.

Now this makes me wonder if the lack of turbo boost I've been experiencing (9psi max) might be caused by the ECM not knowing what temperature the engine really is operating at. Therefore could the ECM be wastegating most of the boost so that the engine can't get too hot? Maybe the engine is running in a failsafe mode. or "Cold Mode".

Things that make you go "hmmmmmmmm".

Last night I replaced the engine monitoring system sending unit and now the engine monitor displays accurate temperature information. There are three of these temperature sensors; all identical; one monitors intake air temp, one monitors fuel temp and one monitors coolant temp.

Still no change in boost, however, so I will continue troubleshooting the charge air cooler and associated piping.

Water temp

I am interested in this subject also. My water temp stays at 150 but I have just a dash OEM gauge. I am thinking it must be a bad sending unit but no idea of it's location. What exactly is the VMSpc? And is it expensive to add it to my Motor Home?

The VMS is the best thing, better than sliced bread. This is what it looks like, just need a lap top.
VMSpc Gallery of Installations | SilverLeaf Electronics, Inc.
I use the VMS 330 but for the price difference I should of went with the lap top

Just thinking if you are running 150 deg your t/stat may be stuck open a bad deal for a diesel, needs to be around 194 to 204 deg.

Yes you may have a problem with your CAC or a bad boot. My C-9 will make 32lbs of boost on a hard pull if I keep my foot in it but I don't like to run that high. Try and keep around 28lbs.
