I was rearranging one of my shelves, and found a 2 micro fuel filter/water separator that has been setting for about 4 or 5 years. Does anyone know what the shelf life is or if there is a shelf life limit. It is still sealed in the clear wrap from the factory. I don't want to use it if it is no good.

I can't imagine any issues with one properly wrapped and stored - I have some like that in my own closet, and fully plan on using them...

If it is wrapped up and sealed and no condensation is visible I would think you would be okay.

My thought would be yes it is probably OK BUT is it worth taking a chance on a possible fuel filter problem? Personally I'd probably toss it.

Do you know when that new one was made? Or how long it was sitting around a warehouse then on the shelves. May be the same age as the one you already had.

Does the new one have a date stamped on it that says use by or buy by?

This info on shelf life applies to Mobil Oil Filters. I would think it may apply to any automotive filter be is gas, diesel or oil!

Let me put it this way.. On the shelf, provided the fittings or casing do not rust out from moisture contamination.. Those filters will last longer than your grand kids. Basically infinite shelf life. No "Expiration" date.

I guess I need to stand corrected.. I received a message recently which says Five Years from date of manufacturer... Or at least the manufacturer the sender works for warrants for five years from date of manufacturer, after that you are on your own.

So if the filters are like 10 plus years old.. I'd guess the recommendation is toss 'em.

Between 5 and 10, I have no recommendation

Under 5, shoudl be good.
