New Measures to Protect Your HEUI Pump

The guy that does the YouTube “Adept Ape” videos on Cat engines recently came out with an interesting video on how to “Bullet Proof” the Cat 3126, C7 & C9 engines. As most experienced and/or informed Cat engine owners know, one of the most vulnerable parts on these engines in the HEUI fuel pump system. “Adept Ape” recommends having your authorized Cat mechanic look up the following Cat Media Letters:

M0068178: This pertains to the gasket and surface area between the oil cooler and oil filter. A defect may allow unfiltered oil to enter the engine.

M0081390: This describes a new HEUI pump inline filter kit, now available from Cat.

I plan on discussing these procedures with my Cat mechanic when I take my MH in for service next week.

HERE is a link to Adept Ape’s video that explains the media letter a little more in detail.

Thanks for sharing.

Too bad the HEUI pump filter kit is only for the C7 engine. I wonder if it could be made to fit a 3126?

New Measures to Protect Your HEUI Pump

Iím sure a bright guy could make it work. I will most likely just go with the HEUI inline filter as well. The other issue seems complicated.

Iím just disappointed that Cat took so long to come up with these modifications. Theyíve known about the HEUI pump failures for years.

There have been several updates to the Heui pump over the years. One of the early problems was the internal coil would fail. Then they found the main shaft bearing wouldn't take the pump loads. After the did that they found the main shaft reflected and caused a bearing to fail. They also had to harden the splines on the pump barrel. They also recommend you use the latest Heui engine oil filter I think the filter is 1R1808 to help keep the oil cleaner. I like the Cat oil because the Heui has some unique requirements, it really doesn't like oil that foams, or stays foamy, it also needs a lot of zinc for the shear forces and a really strong additive package that also because of the shear forces. And keep your oil changes short.

Good information, thanks!

I have only used Cat filters as I had read long ago about how effective they were. My C7ís serial number calls for the 1R-1807 oil filter, which looks similar to the 1808.

Which 3126 engine do you have?
B or E ? I am sure it will fit the E, engine as most of the parts are the same.

It is a good video and instruction about always replacing your oil.
I wish additional information was available about the service bulletin.
It would be better if he responded to some of the questions asked, but he doesn't.

I have watched the Adept Ape video on the heui pump up grade and I am a little puzzled at the post on 3126B or 3126E. All the Cat info I have just refers to mine as a 300hp 3126. I understand that the update kit will not fit the 3126. So if someone comes up with a means to get additional filtration to the pump I hope they post same. I also want to know is there is a difference in 3126, 3126B, 3126E.

3126 were mechanically injected as were 3116. So they had no HEUI pump. There are some differences between the heavy equipment engine and the on highway model engines. As far as I know the all 3126Bs were Heui. As are 3126E

M0081390: This describes a new HEUI pump inline filter kit, now available from Cat.

I looked this up on cat sis. It shows the new heui pump kit as 20R-6642. Old pump # 10R-8899. I am able to find this part online. It lists the following part #'s that I cannot find. If someone wanted to add just the filter to their heui pump I'm not sure how to find the parts.
Elbow 439-1889
Hose 503-7469
Filter 503-7470
