I guess you can do that or just keep the full mark and when it goes down from there just had some oil, the key is to not over fill it, don't run it low either that will not be good. Joe

For the last 4 years I have been fighting an over heating problem with my 3126. Changed the thermostat twice, cleaned the radiator after each trip, flushed the coolant system twice, went to a radiator shop where they did an IR scan and who know what else I have had done. No solution.

While pulling long grades the MH would heat up to 220. I would pull over and it would cool back down to 190 in a matter of minutes, the transmission has never exceeded 189.

I was told by XXX that I would just have to live with it or to dump it on to someone else.

Well I saved up some money and had the After Cooler and Radiator pulled. The lower 1/4 on the inside side of the radiator is shot. They did make the comment that is was very clean and the slobber tube was not the problem. I can take my finger, rub it across the Finns and watch them brake off.

So now I have a new radiator on order. I sure hope this will solve the my problem. Will let you all know after my next trip in a couple of weeks.

I am going to resort to electric fans on the back of the radiator PULLING air through. I have replaced the radiator, thermostats, and it still heats up on the LONG hills.

It may have been mentioned but do keep the engine revolutions up - 2000 RPM or more, shift down and back off the "gas" pedal and go slower up the grades. That makes a world of difference with diesel temperatures.

A problem for a diesel pusher is the radiator is mounted on the side. Your cooling requires more fan operation as you have no ram air effect to provide extra cooling.

Also, as you climb hills without down shifting, while the engine has the torque to accomplish this you have some side effects. As the engine speed drops, the water pump turns slower. This results in the coolant staying in the engine longer acquiring more heat. The second result of this is that the coolant moves through the radiator slower. While it moves through the radiator slower, it is being overcooled such that the extra heat removed is not equal to the extra heat being added by the slower flow. Net effect, the jacket water temperature climbs. Lower engine speed also equates to slower fan speed. If you have a hydraulic drive fan, that is not an issue as it will turn at constant speeds regardless of engine RPM.

You may find this hard to belief but pressure caps fail much more than you may think. When buying a new pressure cap immediately test it to see that it holds its rated pressure. Some testing done by Cummins revealed that radiator caps frequently do not meet the specs for attainment of the pressure rating or cannot hold the rated pressure for more than a few seconds.

My '97 Beaver w/3126 Cat is heating on uphill grades. I have a side mount radiator. Looking with a flashlight, I can see through the fins. Have changed waterpump, cleaned blowby tube, flushed and new antifreeze. What else could be the problem?

According to this thread the thermostats (if two) are both in the same housing.

My 3126 has only one but I know that others have two. I am not sure why some only have one but others have two. Does anyone know why. Would the horse power of the engine have anything to do with it?

Always check your water pump belt, is it in good shape and tight. Have a side radiator and spent 2 hours today after work with a fin comb straightening fins because the previous owner must have used a pressure washer to try to clean it Just did it as I seen the problem with the fins, no overheatig problems. The AC condensor which is mounted in front of the radiator as is a oil cooler was where the fin dammage was.
