I've been considering having the ecu on my 3126 re-flashed to 330 and I'm kind of shocked at the quoted price - $650

I thought that was pretty steep given I was going to have a lot more stuff done at the same time.

Anybody else had this done, and what was the charge?

I just took mine into the Cat dealer in Fife and they checked mine and said that I had all the updates and that there weren't any problems showing. In fact it din't show that there had ever been any codes. They didn't charge me for it either. I asked him about kicking mine up to 350HP and as has said before on this forum, that I wouldn't see much difference for the extra fuel usage. It would have cost around $250 anyway.

Did this price include other maintenance items you were going to have done? The reflash should only be about 1 hour labor.

No, I asked them to itemize everything, so $650 was the re-flash cost.

Normally I wouldn't fool around for a 10% HP increase, but in addition to the HP, the power curve is much flatter across the entire power band on the 330 vs the 300.

I expected a peakier curve, but the 330 should be a lot more drivable than the 300. I haven't seen a curve for the 350.

What does the re-flash do? I bought my Journey used about a year ago and have no idea if it has been reflashed and don't know if I should consider having it done. It is a CAT C7 with about 45K on it now. Thoughts, comments , suggestions?

My understanding is what they are talking about is having the ECU (engine control unit) software upgraded. I had all 6 of the updates for my 2005 year C7 done last week for about $35 at the Cat dealer in Windsor, CO. They can look up your engine serial number and see how many software undates are available and once hooked up to your unit, they can tell how many if any have been done. Upgrading from 300 to 330 hp involves more and is reflected in a higher price.

Upgrading to 330 from 300 on my engine is just a re-flash, nothing additional needed. It changes timing, boost, and fuel settings.

From what I was told at Quinn Cat some earlier engines require larger injectors. If that were the case it would be a helluva lot more than $650!

I checked with my local Cat dealer last year about turning the C7 350HP up in my coach.$1000 to do the job while still in warranty , $500 when it was out of warranty. With just normal flashing of the ECM it still wouldn't have made 400HP.The MP-8 tuner, aeroturbine muffler, and an AFE air filter is still the way to go.
