Trouble shoot over heat 3126
I need some help trouble shooting a isolated over heat. Facts: Ambient temp was 94 F. We were 4 hours into a trip on IH 35 running 1850 rpms. 67.5 mph on flat ground hit a slight grade increase cruise control on rpms went to 2000 and heat gauge rose from center of the idiot gauge to far right hot area also got a overheat light on dash gauges. Disengage the cruise pulled over on shoulder to about 50 mph heat gauge went back down to about 1/4 on the gauge very rapidly, less that 15 seconds. Accelerated to 1700 rpm about 60 mph heat gauge rose to center of meter, reset the cruise and continued another 50 miles to a truck stop. Checked the rear radiator and found the reservoir empty and signs of coolant that had been released. I could not detect from where. I added 1 gallon of 50/50 radiator solution and continued on trip another 8 hours running 1700 to 1900 rpms heat gauge center to slightly more. with no other overheat. The gauge face has the word Normal centered on the gauge. After cool down reservoir was 3/4 full. Looking for places to start looking. Water Pump, Thermostat, Etc. Engine has 87,000 miles. Thanks in advance Richard

I'd be checking the rad cap pressure and replacing the engine thermostats , yes two , t'stats on our engines .
Cat P/N 115-4223 X2, and gasket 136-0812, when mine were replaced 5 years ago.

One non-obvious place to check for leaks is the water heater. If your water heater uses an engine coolant circuit to heat domestic water while you are driving, you can have a coolant leak inside the coach. Mine has two 3/4" hoses that connect to the water heater. It won't leak until the engine warms up and creates some coolant pressure.

there is a plastic fitting (barb), located near the neck area of the radiator. has been know to crack. Replace with metal one. Sorry, do not have photos or drawings anymore.

Check the front side of the CAC/Radiator to see if it's not covered with dirt/dust (gook).
You can do a test with a rag held in back of the radiator as well. It will probably blow straight out around center, but if the radiator is OK, there SHOULD be an equal amount of air coming from anywhere you hold that rag.
It's a common issue if the oil breather has not been extended to the rear bumper, or if there's an issue with that extension. If not vented to the rear bumper, the fan will suck that oily smoke in and blow it on the rad. forming the perfect dust magnet....

Duh why did I miss that. will check the cap first. Any idea what the pressure level should be off the top of your head, before I begin a search>Thanks for getting me back on track. I will up date after checking.Richard

What he said up front was his tank was empty, and was wondering why?

The cap you have should be marked with the pressure . But , if it's not and your coach is on a Freighliner chassis , you can call the free help line with your serial number , for the correct cap info.

I, should have asked in my first post , Is your coach equipped with a , side or rear rad? and did you hear the rad fan ramp up to full SONG ?
Also there are a few posts on, plastic expansion tank failures and replacement with the change up metal tank.

It is a rear radiator. I have been down on top of the engine once. thought I was going to have to call for help to get out. I believe that the fan is on the serpentine belt and I did not notice if it had a clutch. Anyway we can't even hear the engine while under way so no clue to the fan changing speed. Thanks

Rkesselus, chances are that the combination radiator & charge air cooler is really dirty and causing your overheating. There is a gap between the 2 radiators of about an inch, and it's extremely difficult to clean this space.
As a result of overheating, the engine overheat light is coming on, and you may be blowing coolant beyond your radiator cap.
Unfortunately the best repair is to pull the engine radiator, charge air cooler, and take them both to a radiator shop who can thoroughly clean both of them, and then pressure test both. While you have the system open, replace both thermostats, change your belts, and flush and refill the coolant system. Then make sure your slobber tube is extended beyond the back of the rear radiator. It will be good to go for another 10+ years.

Well I just got around to the over heat problem. Installed new Thermostats Flushed the Cooling system and installed new Cat Coolant. I got me one of those Airlift vacuum, purge and refill kits and it worked great. Gave the old beast a good workout and all is good. ( Radiator cap checked out OK) Richard

Keep a close eye on your over flow reservoir.
Before starting next time note exactly where the coolant level is in the reservoir.
Next time you get it up to temperature and the come to a stop, make sure the level has risen in reservoir at least a few inches.
After it cools down it should suck it back into the engine and return to same mark as before.
I had a similar occurrence on I-35 returning from Dallas. I had only checked the level when it was cold and it always looked fine in reservoir.
I discovered that a small (about 1/4")pressurized coolant hose that ran between the thermostat housing and the expansion tank had rubbed against a metal shroud and developed a pin hole leak. This sprayed and seeped out coolant when hot. It depressurized the cooling system and when coolant got too low, it did not allow the overflow coolant to surge into the reservoir (non pressurized in my case).
