What about a C-10 equipped Magna?

We're looking at a 2000 40ft Magna with one slide and a C-10 Cat supposedly set at 385hp. I know alot about Cummins C8.3, ISC and ISL and the various issues there. But not familiar with the Cats.

I see the thread here about the C-9 which replaced the C-10. Why did they move away from the C-10? Emissions?

Fred

C-10 equipped Magna

Fred,
Also try your post over in the Country Coach owners forum of IRV2.
The Cat C10 engine was produced from about 1997 until 2004 so I believe it was just replaced as a matter of the evolution of technology. The CC versions were rated at 385 HP. C10 means Caterpillar engine, at approximately 10 liters displacement.
I can only speak from experience in the operation and maintenance of the Cat C12 engine, as that is what is in my 2001 Affinity. I can only say that I have had no problems with it at all. I have only had scheduled maintenance performed. No issues at all. I currently have 85,000 miles on the engine.
That's about all I can tell you about CAT engines, and not even the one you are looking for, sorry.
If you haven't owned a Country Coach before, you will absolutely love it. They are a high line coach built to last. Quality all the way through.

Luck,
Bob

That is the same coach year and model I purchased in 2010. I love it and will keep it until I have to quit rv'ing.

From what I can see of the C9, it overlaps the torque range of the C10 and approaches the C10 in horsepower at 375. Interesting to note that CAT advertised the C10 at 375 hp but it does actually generate 385 hp. At least, my C10 hit 385 hp on the test stand when it was built. I suspect you are right in thinking emissions was the cause.

As a side note. Check the charge air cooler. Many coaches, not just Country Coaches, had problems with CACs during this era. I had to replace mine at a total cost of about $4100. If the coach you are looking at has not had the CAC replaced, factor this into the price.

I to have a 2000 Magna with the optional CAT C10 and have had it for just over a year and put an additional 12K miles on it. I've got about 55k miles on it currently and have only had to replace one coolant pipe that was on the engine. Its run great and I love the three position Jake brake while on the road. I think the C10/C12 engine family was ultimately replaced with emission gadget loaded engines (C9/C15?). I've been very pleased with my CAT C10.

Ok good information. We are having the coach inspected before buying a ticket to go get it. If it checks out ok we plan to buy it 3/31.

Hello Fred, we have a 99 Magna with the c10 385 HP engine and have also been very pleased. However, the engine monitor has started blinking on and then shuts off after driving for about 5 to 10 minutes. Do you know what kind of monitor it is? Scan Gauge type? It has a memory card in it? I have been very pleased with the information it provides me. Do you know if I can just replace it or any ideas as to what is causing it? Wonder if it is getting hot somehow?? Thank you. Lisa

Sorry Lisa, I can't find any information on it either. We have not purchased the coach yet so I don't have any real life information. I've searched the web but can't find any documentation on that monitor.

C10 engine monitor on 99 Magna

Fred, I found out that it is called the CAT ID and was replaced yrs ago by the CAT messenger to monitor engine diagnostics. It works great when it was working until recently. I am still researching the Messenger vs changing to Silverleaf 330 with data being viewed in the back up monitor. Thx Fred. Will keep you posted as I find out information. Lisa
