This may be a stupid question but when driving on the highway the transmission shifts thru the gears in a normal manner. On the other hand when getting off the highway and traveling at a speed limit of 45 mph the trans doesn't want to shift to the highest gear. What might I be doing wrong here? The only way I seem to be able to get into the higher gear is to go about ten miles over the speed limit then it shifts and stays there until I might either really slow down or come to a stop. Then the process has to start over again. My problem is if the cops are sitting up the road and catch the excessive speed only to get the trans to shift is a hard sell if you get pulled over. Should I be turning off the the O/D? Don't have to do that on the daily vehicle, or there something else I need to learn about this transmission. Any help here would be GREAT.

My MH with the 4000 Allison will not shift into sixth gear unless I get up to about 57 mph. I believe that they are programmed that way so you don't get on the downside of the torque curve.

Thanks for the response Mike. I kind of thought that it may be set up that way. It just seems not to do it all the time though. Maybe if I accelerate a little harder to let it get up thru the gears that might help also. Just want to keep the foot out of the gas as much as possible though, with the price of that stuff today. Where is it going to end? Probably wont.

I think the idea is to keep the diesel up at an rpm close to the "sweet spot" for fuel economy. I cannot drive right on 55 because like I said it says in 5th. I can drive 57-58 mph and it will stay in 6th. That would be a heck of an excuse to the Highway Patrol.

my moho has the gas 8.1 and alli 1000 5 sp.
Brazels reprogramed my alli 1000 5sp so that it will go into 5th (od) at 48 mph on a level road. this works much better. it was 55 mph before.

My setup is likely different from the OP's so take this FWIW. If driving where the speed limit or other circumstances dictate a speed in the 45 mph area, my 5 speed 2500 MH tranny will stay in fourth gear with the standard setting. However, if I turn the "mode" setting on, it runs in top (5th) gear and the mpg readout is considerably better. "Mode" in my unit is the economy setting and changes the tranny shift points. JFWIW.

Boy I wish I had a mode setting but on the gas rigs I don't believe that's possible. If it is please let me know and I'll start looking for how to engage it. Anyway, I took it out today to get gas (before it goes up even more) and played around a little with acceleration speeds. Seems that it I accelerated a little faster even though I didn't get over 48 mph it would shift into 5 gear. Now when I accelerated as I usually did (the old fuddy duddy way), yup it stuck itself in 4th gear. Even if I accelerated up to over 50mph it would not crack out of 4th. So I guess I have a knew driving habit when driving in town. Now where's all the GT Mustangs and big CORVETTES, I want to see what this thing will really do. Oh by the way gas went up a healthy .09 here in MI (at Sam's Club) since just last Saturday. Todays price was $3.819/gal. for a total of $220.00. The wife and I shouldn't weigh much by the end of summer as we won't have enough money for food.

Sorry, I just don't know. I assume you have the 1000 alli tranny, so maybe others here with it can be more helpful. I know some transmissions have a tow mode, but believe that's in pickups.

If you think gas prices are bad, look at diesel!

My 2002 W-22,with the 1000 5 speed will not shift into 5th gear until 55MPH. Thats the way it has always been. Obviously that depends on grade, throttle posistion and load. Wireman

brazels in centralia, wa. reprogrammed my allison 5 speed to shift into 5th (od) at 48 mph at about 1600 rpm under light load about 18 months ago. this works well for me.
my alli will sometimes shift out of od when climbing overpasses at 55 mph in cruise control.
brazels accomplished the 5-4-3 rapid downshift tsb when they did my brake recall in may. this works better now too.
the lower speed od reprogram is usually part of brazels grade brake upgrade. i did not have that done.
brazels is a sponsor of this forum.
i am well satisfied with their work.

Dan, thank you. ON my gasser I too am not 100% pleased with the shift points.. Would like lower speed shift points less I"m standing on the accelerator.

I can't even trick it into upshifting at lower speeds.

Brazels in Centralia, WA. reprogrammed my Allison 1000 5 speed as well. I had the same late shift into overdrive problem. After the reprogramming it now shifts into over drive at between 45 to 48 mph depending on throttle position. I also had the Ultra Power upgrade done on my engine ECM and am very happy with that change as well.

Diesel here is $4.199 and I take 150 gallons if completely empty. Now I know why I'm working a part time (32 hrs/wk) minimum wage. That allows me to fill up once a month!! Good thing my wife works and I have two retirements coming in and my wife has one, plus her full time job!
