3000 transmission overfill
Had my Allison 3000 transmission (2013) served and the dealer over filled it by 3-4 quarts. In discussion with the service writer he said he checked the level with the dip stick, explained to him that it must be checked with the up-down button on the transmission shift panel.
In any case had the access drained after 450 miles, the fluid drained out was filled with chips. Understanding that some level of damage was done to the transmission, I have 2 questions? Should the transmission be drained and filled with the proper level of fluid, How much damage has been done to the transmission.

Hi Tom, I am going to say 3-4 quarts of over fill will not make metal chips in your transmission......I am thinking there are bigger problem's inside of it.
Maybe a fluid test is in order along with a call to Allison, and talk with their tech support about this.

You might also want to PM Tom Johnson and ask him his thought's........He also owns a lab that does testing on fluid's. Before retiring, he developed/helped with the Transynd fluid that is in your transmission.

Overfilling can cause the oil to aerate but you would notice that because the vent at the top of the transmission would be blowing out transmission fluid and your transmission would probably overheat. Every transmission will have some sort of metal "flake" in the fluid. The only real way to see if your transmission has excessive debris would be to have your valve body or control module removed and check the internal suction filter.

When I say metal flake, I mean very fine, glittery type.

Do an oil analysis. That will tell you what's going on inside the transmission.

A diagnosis of overfill can be misleading--fluid level must be checked with the engine running and the tranny at ops temps. A properly filled tranny [verified on stick or via the key pad] will appear be overfilled if it has been allowed to cool down for awhile and fluid has drained back from the torque converter to the tranny. Not sure what "chips" you might be seeing but likely they weren't caused by an "overfill" condition.

You'll need the Advanced Oil Analysis from JG Lubricant Services and the analysis will reveal (4) things about the fluid and transmission:
- The viscosity of the fluid (the fluid's response to internal part loads, "mechanical stresses")
- The oxidation state of the fluid (the fluid's response to heat, "thermal stresses")
- What contaminants might be in the fluid (water, coolant, dirt, wear metals)
- How the transmission is responding to the fluid conditions above (wear metals)
This may help: http://www.jglubricantservices.com/d...ical_sheet.pdf

I would think they would have seen "chips" in the oil when they drained and serviced the trans, or,,, did they UNDER fill it, do a test, or have a leak and then overfill it? I can't believe a service center would use the dip stick,,,, not the key pad, and then over fill it!
Just doesn't sound right. Whats the service center's name, want to make sure I never go there.
Good luck with it,
