Allison 1000 Fluid Capacity

Anyone know how much fluid to add after a normal trans. drain, not including the converter etc.

Thank you in advance

That will vary with how much the transmission cooler loop and cooler take. Check the Allison web site for the actual transmission capacity.

Well might depend on if your talking about different brands of chassis, the OP has a Workhorse chassis and according to the WH Chassis guide the W22 with an Allison 1000 trans fluid change would be 10.6 quarts

OP that will get you started, i measured how much drained out and then added that much back in, ran it up to operating temp and check dip stick.

I've changed mine many times. I drain it into a bucket that has measured marks on the side. I will usually get about 10 quarts. The actual capacity is about 13 quarts but the torque converter doesn't drain.

I add back in the exact amount of new fluid to replace what I drained. I then drive about 20 miles and drain and refill again.

That is what Allison recommends.

The 2004 La Palma came with Dexron iii transmission fluid. I suggest changing to what Allison now recommends which is Transynd or any fluid that meets the TES 295 standard which they list on their website.

There is also a spin on transmission fluid filter and I always change that too, moving the magnet that is on the base of it to the new filter.

You don't have to do the drain and refill twice unless you are changing from non-TES295 to TES295 fluid.
Once it has TES295 in it, you can drain and refill once just like any other transmission or engine.
