Allison 1000 Issue.....Maybe?????

Have 2004 W22 w/Allison 1000 transmission, 65,000 miles.

On our last trip I began hearing a "whinning" noise which sounded like a power steering whine. At low rpm's the noise is more prevalent (like starting out from a green light) but as the transmission shifts thru the gears the whine diminishes and once in overdrive very little whine. I can still hear it but it's faint. At idle no whine.

Driving down the road however if I turn the steering wheel slightly left or right the whine becomes much louder. Then it goes away once the steering wheel is centered.

Convinced I had a power steering system issue, I drained the PS, changed the canister filter and refilled with the proper fluid. I also installed a new idler pulley, new tension pulley and a new serpentine belt. I lowered the front jacks taking the front tires off the ground and moved the wheels from lock to lock to make sure all air was out the of the system and there was no noise from the PS system at all. Quiet and smooth like you'd expect.

Thinking I had my issue solved today I took the coach out for a 15-20 mile test run and the whine is still there just like I described above. So it's making me wonder if I have something amiss in the transmission. BTW....In case your wondering I changed to Transynd following procedures found here in the forum and still have the whine. The transmission shifts fine, nice and smooth and when It's supposed to. Turning the AC off makes no difference either.

So, I'm at a loss and hoping someone can give me tips/advise on what may be happening and what I should do next.

TIA

Have you checked your wheel hub/bearings? I had a similar whine on a previous truck and that was the issue, got louder when you turned because you changed the direction of the noise

My ‘04 does the same thing. Thinking I’m going to wait till it breaks so I’ll know what it is.

Gavenger......I have not had the wheel bearings checked but will do so. Plan to take it to the shop soon and will have them looked at. Thanks

Scooter.....still have the noise. I'm pretty sure it's not the tranny and becoming more and more convinced it power steering related however Gavenger has given me something else to check out. A rebuilt PS pump is about $700 and I hate to spend that money only to find the noise is still there. Do you have the same issue?

Try a mechanics stethoscope to determine where the noise is coming from.
