I'm overnighting here in Piscataway NJ for a service appointment tomorrow morning at Atlantic Detroit Diesel Allison...hope they don't mind me "borrowing" their power...I did call and tell them I was coming here Sunday night.

I'm asking for a transmission service at 19200 miles, since I bought this RV used last August and have put 8000 miles on it since then, I wanted to have the fluid/filters changed and I've experienced some pan gasket leaks that I want fixed. I have no transmission issues to date.

Hope the expense will be worth the piece of mind of knowing the status of the transmission, I've changed the spin on filter but just don't know what the previous owners did (or didn't do).

Anybody ever use this company for Allison transmission service?

I have to say I'm extremely satisfied with this service facility. They serviced the RV this morning as requested, then they changed over my transmission fluid to Transynd. I can't get over how much better the transmission runs now...quieter, shifting smoother, auto downshifts/upshifts smoother, a huge improvement.

I'm a little confused that they instruct me that I don't need another service till 50,000 miles...I thought if you went from Dexron III to Transynd you had to change out the fluid at 1000 miles, they say it's not necessary.

I'm guessing they have the tools/ability to remove the old fluid entirely, anybody know anything about this?

Gerry,

We used Pacific Detroit Diesel Allison in Oregon to do the Transynd conversion when we had the Southwind 32V. I believe they have the appropriate flushing machine to remove practically all the old ATF and replace it with Transynd. I think the 50K service is correct, but you can check Allison's website for a complete, abet a bit complicated, presentation for the Allison 1000.

Paul

Thanks, Paul...from what I see they used about 12.5 gallons of Transynd, and assuming the RV tranny has the shallow pan, the dry capacity should be 12.7 gallons, so I believe you are correct.

I did see somewhere on this forum that for motorhomes of my vintage, the shallow pan was used, can't confirm that in my documentation.

Anyway, I'm still surprised at the improved transmission performance I've experienced...460 mile trip coming up to New Hampshire on Thursday, will be another good test.

I'm not sure...I thank you for the link, though.

After completing a 430 mile trip yesterday, I still can't believe the difference in the operation of the transmission with the Transynd fluid, and I'm also getting better fuel economy/mileage.

Hi GerryB54,

The Allison folks at the rally said if you change to transynd, by just draining the pan and adding a new filter, you can run 25,000 miles before the next change (half of the recommended Dextron III 50,000 mileage). Both fluids are completely compatible.

This will be the next move on my rig----

Hey Max, thanks for the info...they completely drained my transmission, but they did say I needed the next service at 50,000 miles (have 20,000 miles on it now)...from what they told me I have almost 100% transynd in the transmission, and it really made a noticeable improvement.
