Allison 3000 speedometer sensor

My speedometer varies from accurate to 15% high. It's usually 10% high. Is there a connector that might be dirty n the Allison?

Sensor for the speedo info is located on the tailshaft of the transmission on the driver side . If your speed read out fluctuates and you don't get a transmission fault code , chances are the problem is in the speedo head.
If the read out was constant 10 % high you could check that a previous owner hadn't changed tire sizes.

My speedo acted up just after I bought the coach. I removed the access panel on top of the dash and could see all gauges. I took a nut driver and tightened all the nuts in the cluster. White wire is the ground and it is daisy- chained thru all gauges. I tightened all I could reach and followed the white wire to a ground block and tightened all of then also. Now it is steady all the time. There are dip switches on the speedo to change the settings for different tires. My speedo is a Beede, I would call them if yours is the same.

Faria Beede Instruments, Inc.

Good Luck
Dave

The speed sensor in the transmission sends its signal to the transmission controller. The controller provides a separate signal out to the speedo head. If the speed sensor in the transmission was sending incorrect signals it would mess up the shift points also. The issue is likely in the speedo head itself or its wiring.

So the Allison ecm sends the signal to the speedo head? Is the head the gauge itself?
Where is the Allison ecm anyway? Under the keypad?

Yes. If you follow the wires, the two speed sensor wires go into the TCM and one of the outputs from the TCM goes to the speedo. Yes, the speedo head is the gauge.

The TCM may be separate from the selector and mounted in the vehicle or it may be attached to the selector. Both configurations are available. I really don't know where in each and every vehicle the manufacturer mounts them if the TCM is separate.

Here's a picture of your WTEC III controller and shift pad. As dbarton , said they are located in different places in every coach , sometimes location can vary with floor plan.

Now my tach is 1000 Rpms too high. Does the tach from the alternator (I think it goes to an 87a relay first) go to the Allison MD3000MH ECM before it goes to the tach gauge? My ECM is under the shifter. I may take it out and clean the connections.

No. The Allison controller does not drive or interface with the engine tachometer at all.

Problem with my tach was dirty connections on the back of the gauge. While I was in there I loosened the speedometer connectors and sprayed them well with deoxit. Speedometer is now right on after years of being 10-15% high!!!
