We have a 2001 Tradewinds with 87,000 miles on a Freightliner chassis powered by a 330 CAT and a 3000 Allison transmission.

We've never had a problem with the transmission until lately when it began to have a little whine from first to second gear. Not all the time, but occasionally it would whine. I changed filters and fluid with Allison's Transyn synthetic fluid. We have taken a 450 mile trip and it seemed to be whining in every gear. However, the transmission works perfectly.

Question is: Has anyone had this problem? If so, how was it corrected?

Could it be your universal joints rather than the Allison? Have you checked for codes?

Are you sure it's not the rear end gears whining and not the tranny?

Always sample the transmission fluid first before doing anything else. A good doctor will always run tests long before scheduling surgery !!! The fluid may still have been OK. Also, it would have shown if there were any signs of serious gear or bushing wear.
