Allison 4000 transmission

I have a 2005 beaver patriot thunder with the Allison 4000 transmission that started leaking fluid this weekend. It leaks at the retarder gasket. Has anyone had this problem? Is it possible to change it myself? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

If the retarder gasket is parallel to the flywheel and the drive line is on one side and flywheel on the other it could be a DIY project but big tools needed and if you are not experienced with automatics it would be a gamble and expensive if you get past point of no return.

That being stated...Get some greased lightening or other good decrease and fill up a garden sprayer and start cleaning.

Spray on let soak and rinse at full strength.

Now look for fresh stuff as leak may be somewhere else...maybe...

Interesting. Patriot Thunder should have a Jake brake, not a transmission retarder?

You are right it does not have a retarder it is leaking at the rear cover. Oops! Just wondering if anyone knows if I can pull that rear cover off and not have a lot parts coming with it?

Thank you so much. That's the only info I have found so that's even close to what I need, unfortunately it does not have anything on the rear cover My search continues

Allison service manuals available here:

I don't know, but can you remove the drive yoke and replace the seal without removing the rear cover? My previous link says the yoke is a 'one bolt' yoke, hmmmm
