Today I changed the fluid and filter on my Allison 1000. I purchased these items at the local Atlantic Detroit Diesel shop (also Allison repair center), here in Latham, NY. I purchased a 5 gallon pail of Transynd for $150.00 and the filter was $7.00. The Transynd was actually one quart more than 5 gallons! The transmission took 12 quarts for the drain/refill, so I plan on draining off two gallons after a trip we are taking, to use up the remaining two gallons. This should get the majority of the old fluid out.

$150.00 for 5 gallons appears to be a good price. I'm seeing Transynd TES 295 ranging 35.00/gallon to $80.00/gallon. Does it say: TES 295?

I did my Allison 1000 transynd change last year and the 2nd one last week, I put about 4000 mile on it, the trans oil came out clean and the magnet didn't have anything on it, there is a magnet on the top of your filter. The trans seems to be quiter and shift smoother.

Paid $40/gallon myself used the the BP product. In our 3000 there are 2 filters and that replacement kit (Wix filters) was $100.

Not a cheap service but I figured I saved the labor cost.

The BP AUTRAN SYN 295 is TRANSYND. Castrol is a wholly owned subsidiary of BP and AUTRAN SYN 295 is packaged under the Allison trademarked name of "TRANSYND" to be sold exclusively by Authorized Allison Dealers only. I have seen the AUTRAN SYN 295 Packaging Line in the Beaumont, Texas BP plant stopped while the label rolls were changed from AUTRAN to TRANSYND and restarted without changing anything but the labels.

SpursMVP,

In the FWIW department, the last time I bought filters, the Allison filters were in the $45 range and Wix were around $75.

A mechanic at the Allison shop claimed to have rebuilt 3 transmissions that had used Wix filters. All showed evidence of oil starvation. Wix filters have a reputation for being "good", perhaps "too good" in this application.

Their point was that you don't have to use the Allison filters and other brands are ok, but don't use Wix.

Another FWIW - I have not yet changed a filter in the Allison (yet) but at the seminar in Redmond last week the Allison representative said there is a pattern difference in the holes at the top of the filter and that the magnet can restrict flow if the hole pattern is not correct as with some other filter brands. He said the transmissions are pressure driven so (possible) flow restrictions can cause a problem.

In the eleven years I have had diesel motorhomes and Allison transmissions, they have had three different filter standards. At first there was the standard filters, then the Gold Series filters and the latest is the High Capacity filters. Each time Allison has extended their warranty and the drain intervals, they had specified the latest filters must be used. If I do a cross reference between the Allison filters and WIX filters, do I get WIX filters that are comparable to the Gold Series or the High Capacity filters? I prefer to stick with Allison filters.

I got my latest Allison High Capacity filters (for MH3000) at a Cummins shop for $44. I didn't need them at that time, but the price was too good to pass. I ordered BP AUTRAN SYN 295 online for $34 a gallon plus shipping so it cost almost $40 a gallon to my door. (No sales tax)

I have been told the same thing about WIX filters and that is that they are almost too good. The recommendation was to change filters often if I used the WIX brand. I don't see how you can go wrong using the Allison Extended Capacity filters and Transynd. The change/service intervals are quite reasonable with this combination. BTW, I paid 56 for the Allison twin-pak of filters/gaskets/etc.

Great stuff here.

Although my RV shop is not an Allison dealer...they use Wix filters on every DP they service. They've been in business for 40 years so I was basing my thoughts on their normal service.

May switch to Allison filters on our next change. The good news is we're still only putting about 7k miles per year on our coach so we have a little time.
