Hi
I already have had one Fluid change with Trans-synd being used. Im thinking of doing this next service myself(2nd trans-synd service). A few questions:
1) I cant believe what a hard time Im having finding the Filter Kit (#29540494)...I sent two hours looking on line. My local Authorized Allison dealer looked at me funny when I said I wanted the "Gold" series filters, so that doesnt lead to great confidence in my book.

2) This same "dealer" wanted 10.00 a quart for Trans-synd, it doesnt sound that bad because I thought I read elsewhere that it was 34-40.00 a gallon?

3) I have located "cross referenced" filters for the Trans but I must ask if this would spell trouble? I mean Im still talking name brand filters(Donaldson, Baldwin etc etc) to name a few.

Any other pittfalls or suggestions if I take this on myself?
Thanks for any idea's suggestions

Mobil Delvac Synthetic ATF is approved by Allison for their transmissions, and is less expensive than Transynd.

Product Listing

Check their web site for approved filters.

We've changed fluid & filters on four different Allison 4000 series trannys w/4" sumps lately, yr models 98, 99, 00, & 02. They all used Allison filter kit #29548988. From the local Allison dealer, Stewart & Stevenson, the filter kits cost $53.50ea, and the Transynd is $149.50 per 5 gal pail, or $30.50 per 1 gal jug.

We hope this helps

Thats some good info....I got my part number from the invoice from the first service, I can only assume they put the right part in it. During my Internet search I found the part number listed BUT no one had it in stock and then noticed one place had it listed as a 6" sump. I have a feeling Ill just get everything together minus the filters and then hopefully find one dealer with stock at hand to match the filters too. Thank You also for the info on the price of fluid.

Allison no longer makes the Gold filters, they have changed to a High Capacity one with different part numbers.

Here's the
LINK to the latest Service Tip with the info you (and lot of others) need.

No wonder that guy looked at me weird when I asked for the "Gold series" filters....thanks for the heads up. Whats the concensus on using cross referenced Fleetguard or Donaldson filters?

This has been discussed numerous times and the recommendation is to stick with the Allison filters.

Appreciate all the info...as to the filters, Im just wondering if anyone has any first hand knowledge of using other brands of filters? Im fully aware of what Allison suggests and Im also aware of the "urban legends" about filter collaspse. Im going to use Allison brand filters but Im just posing a question to anyone who has taken a chance and either been surprised or devastated.

I get the filters from Allison and will not risk tearing up the tranny. Cost too much to fix. The logic is you don't change the filters that much and the Allison filters don't cost too much more than a WIX filter. It just ain't worth it. Same on the fluid. It came with Transynd so why save a few bucks putting something else in or mixing two brands. Again just not worth the hassle and risk.

While I totally agree the difference in price is not worth the risk, I still cant help but wonder about "why" would another manufacturer(Wix, Fleetguard, Baldwin, Donaldson) bother to produce a cross referenced filter if absolutely no one is using them? As to the fluid's...I did check on the TES295 Mobil Syn fluid and as was pointed out, it is accepted per Allison spec's although my on line inquires indicate it is as much as TranSynd, cost wise.

Becareful on the fluids. Because a company state their fluids meet TS295 specs does not mean that is has it been tested and approved as TS295 by Allison. Mobil 1 has not been approved by Allison as TS295 but Mobil Delvac Synthetic has. They are sneaky

Probably you guys also visit the Allison Transmission powertrain garage forum too. But, if you haven't been there (I know Mike Canter has), you can get my feedback. I was the Allison Transmission Fluids Engineer from 1990-2009 when I retired. I developed TranSynd with BP/Castrol, wrote the TES-295 spec and approved all the TES-295 fluids.

Go to RV Chassis Parts for your tranny filters -- this is the retail outlet for Spartan Chassis and I am willing to bet they will have the high capacity filters you need. I would not recommend using anything but Allison filters. RV Chassis Parts will have a lot of the items you use on your motor home and their prices are very reasonable -- I buy all my filters (chassis and generator) from them along with other parts that I need for the chassis.
