Allison md3060 rebuild!

Finally took it out, took it apart, detect the problem(s), back together rebuilt.

Out and starting to fabricate holding fixture and revolver.

Starting to come together......

Put it to bed for now. Next for the bell housing adapter, converter and valve body. Then she goes back in.

Thanks for the post. I've never seen an automatic transmission torn apart.

Amazing.

I change my fluid regularly and now I know why it needs to be done on a regular basis.

Ah, brings back memories of my recent engine swap in our Acura MDX. The DW didn't understand that a check engine light combined with a loss of power and a temp. guage pegged above "H" might signal a problem. In this case, a radiator stone-hit at the bottom.

I did a used engine because of the extensive overheat damage.

I got fed up with the run around with the "Authorized Dealers" and decided to do it myself. Not bad at all to work on. Actually like working on this better than the smaller vehicle types. It's quite simple just a lot bigger. The local dealer in town are now just parts changers. They do not do any rebuilding in house. They send the unit away to get rebuilt.
I was getting a 54-34 code of the keypad.
What really aggrevated me was when I took the unit in to the dealer to hook up to the computer to do a diagnostics check they just treated the coach like it was a dirty piece of road construction machinery. I had put down blankets to cover the carpeted area in the front. The technician climbed in with greasy boots and dirty cover-alls and sat down on my leather seat My jaw just dropped. I thought how ignorant can one be? Not like he needed to be all suited up with dirty cover-alls to operate a lap top computer. That was the final straw.
I even ordered my own DOCS software and hardware to do this stuff myself. I found a very competent and reliable supplier out of Alberta for parts.
I'm thinking I should do this as a side-line seeing as to how no one else does this in town.

It would not make the 3-4 shift. It would kick into 3rd limp mode. It was the C2 piston seal (the large diameter white teflon one). There was evidence the other rubber lip type seals were losing their profile also on C4 and C5 but they were still sealing. The output shaft tone ring was loose and wobbling back and forth on the roll pin(that wasn't the problem in this case but could be a problem later on).
Basicly needed a reseal. The nice thing being all electronic, the computer prevents it from burning up the clutches. Clutches and all other mechanicals of the tranny were in excellent condition. The coach only had 66,000 miles on it. That is the problems with units doing a lot of sitting and not enough cruising.

Thanks....I wanted to do a more detailed picture shoot (never did a picture trail before on a project). Camera and tranny fluid don't really go together. It was always a pain remembering "Oh I better take another picture, better go wash my oily hands". The end result was cool being able to show other people a little "How To".

TRAILERKING,

Clearly this is not your first rodeo... You must work on transmissions for a living (or did at one time). Either way, I'm impressed!!!

Even having done my fair share of mechanical work, I've always found automatic transmissions daunting, and I'd never attempt to tackle one of these big boys.

I was able to follow along the picture trail up to about the second picture:
1) getting the trans out.
2) building a rotating bracket for your engine stand.
After that... I was lost!

Let us know when you start your Allison rebuild business!

Bill

Thanks for the compliment.
I have done mechanical work from years ago for car dealerships doing engine/trans/diff work. I did a lot of heavyduty diesel work along with my dad way back. Had a little sideline mobile mechanic and welding business going. I now run my own machine shop for over 15 years. My mentality now is if we can't get something......We make it. This is the first MD3060 I've disected and it's not too intimidating.
I think there is a market for that kind of level of service to the larger coaches..........around here anyway.
Who knows what will happen. I know I would like to get out and start enjoying the motorhome, that's for sure.

Hahaha.......I do have a lot of old parts left over. Changing the rear air bags while it's still out. A little more roomier with it out of the way.
