$175 per hour X 2,080 hrs ( 8 hr day 5 days a week) is $364,000 year. That's more than an average Doctor, Lawyer, Architect make.....for a diesel mechanic. It's highway robbery.

How many folks reading this make $364 K a year

Mechanics do not get paid $175 per hour. That is the shop rate which pays for everything associated with running that shop such as electricity, telephone, insurance, taxes, building lease, on and on. Then comes the tech wages. They are probably not making more than $20 an hour if that.

I will do as much of the routine and non-routine maintenance work as I can. Besides enjoying it, it gives me peace of mind as I know it was done right. Only if I can't figure it out, under warranty or if I am uncomfortable doing it will my rig ever see the din of a repair shop.

Just as an aside to the entire topic of maintenance, I am totally convinced that storing an RV in a fully enclosed garage with heat/humidity controls makes a huge difference in keeping non routine maintenance of the chassis and house to a minimum. I know if you live in the south, that can be expensive to do, especially the heat and humidity part, but I am convinced of it. My cars, motorcycles and RVs have always been garaged when not in use and for 45 years, and I can see the results. And it makes sense, does it not?
