Allison Transmission Temperture's

I tow a 3 axle 36' Newmar 5th wheel. Empty is 13,200 lbs. I figure we have an additional 2,000 - 3,000 lbs of stuff making the trailer weigh 15,200 - 16,000 lbs.

I have a 2007 GMC dually with the Allison trans. What is the max continuous duty towing temp?

I had a 2003 1 ton dually. I installed 70 hp programmer. When pulling the trailer on a steep interstate hwy hill the trans would slip and go into the cripple mode. I was told it was the torque converter not being able to handle the over stock power. Is that true?

Thank you,
Andy

I had a 07 3500 when I bought my 18K 5th wheel. I was concerned about the temps as well and it would climb to 205-208 in 100 degree weather. I took it to a transmission shop that has a reputation for being Allison gurus and had them change the filters. They said up to 220, no problem since they have synthetic oil. I never had the problem you described but mine was stock. However it already had 175K on it when I got the 5er. I know many people who have programmers on theirs w/o problems, so I don't think that is your issue.

I sold that truck with 186K and no problems other than I needed a dually. I have a Ford now but I would buy another GM D/A in a heartbeat. I loved that truck.

I would agree that your trans was going into "limp mode" on the 2003. I have a 2003 and have had the same problem. The tran had to be rebuilt and was done by one of the best (Mike L.) and have had no issues since. I was running an 85hp tune and burnt the clutchs and had the torque converter starting to go. I now run around 500hp at the wheel with no problems after the rebuild. Mike also said that 220° was not an issue for me while towing.
