Former Allison Oils Engineer Back and Ready for Questions

All,

I've decided to come back to IRV2 after taking a bit of a break. So, let me know what you need in the way of transmission fluid questions specific to Allison transmissions.

For those of you who weren't following before, I was the Transmission Fluids Engineer at Allison Transmission from 1990 until my retirement in 2009. I wrote the Allison TES-295 and TES-389 specifications and worked with BP for over 10 years to develop and approve TranSynd. I worked with the GM ATF Committee to review and approve DEXRON-IIE, DEXRON-III and DEXRON-VI products and also sat on the Engine Oil Review Committee for the SAE Lubricants Review Institute to review and approve engine oils for the US Army's tactical and combat vehicles.

Welcome back, it is great to have someone with your experience on Allison transmissions. The question I have is do older allison transmissions that were provided with Dexron III fluids have to be changed to the newer synthetic fluids? They are past warranty and many have lots of miles. I've changed mine but the question remains - is it necessary?
Thanks

Welcome back. and yes I do have a question
When I was on vacation last year, out on I-70 in the Colorado mountains around dillon I saw some large flatbed trucks with weights permanatly bolted to the bed and even larger tractor trailers set up the same way and they had the "Allison" righ there on the doors.
I am sure these are Allsions R & D test vehicles.
Of course I am gonna ask how I can get employed there as a tech in the R&D department. I do have exp working with the R&D department at Crane Cams when I worked there years ago.

Hi Tom!!! Say, there's a guy over on another RV forum that posted a question to you and I noticed you hadn't replied. Got a little worried something may have happened to you so I'm glad to see you are doing good!
We need your input here for sure.

Bob,

It's not necessary but you'll just need to change it a lot more often and check it to be sure it hasn't lost viscosity. DEXRON-III fluids were good from an oxidation standpoint but not very good on keeping their viscosity. That's why I came out with the TES-295 specification for Allison. It kept (and even improved) the oxidation resistance and did away with the viscosity loss problem.

Problem is .... the GM DEXRON-III specification is obsolete so GM engineers no longer review them. So, they are old formulations and no one is looking over any changes that the oil companies make.

Mekanic,

Yes, those are Allison R&D units. The weights are used to change vehicle inertia so they can simulate different vehicles and different loads using smaller trucks. You can search job openings at: Allison Transmission
