This must be a typo “ 2-3 gallons”?

Sounds more like a an answer as to how much will come out when fully draining the system.

Not what he asked.

I would guess you are safe with a 10 gallon jug purchase. Someone else can confirm that.

If you buy locally they most likely will take back what gallons you don’t use. Just ask when you are buying.
I found Allison TranSynd and Fleetrite TES-295 at a local International truck service center. They were less than my Freighter dealer and much nicer people.

Well, this doc does imply its quite a bit, and I would think it comes directly from the pump and valve body so that will likely be more than just the pan itself.

And as far as the price for fluid goes, the Trade-Marked stuff runs 60$ a gallon. The local service gets 44$ a gallon, but as I understand it, this is the same stuff and I doubt anybody will beat summits price.

It was just under $40 at the International dealer for the Fleetrite brand one last year. I’m pretty sure It was there that the Allison one was less than $5 more per gallon as well. Price varies widely I found. If you have the time and patience you may find it less with a few calls locally.
Best of luck.

Allison MD3060 Oil Results

I have a 1995 Allison in a motorhome that has been stored for about 6 years. We are changing all fluids, tires, belts, etc. In some old records it looks like the trans oil had been changed years ago to TranSynd. So instead of changing I did the oil testing. Motor home has 80,000 miles. This trans has about 500 miles since it's storage, but moisture levels seem to too high.
Questions:
1. Is this TranSyd oil? Would the moisture levels drop over time?
2. Any suggestions on changing oil or filters or both?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Change the trans fluid and filter as it is probably acidic. Also, change the oil/filter and use dino oil. I found very little benefit to synthetic oil in the 8.1L

Your fluid analysis states that this is a TES-295 fluid. That's the spec that Transynd was developed around and any fluid that meets the spec is equivalent to Transynd. The contaminants noted are all in the "minor" category (including the water). Therefore, there is no reason to change the fluid at this time.

However, to be safe, I would recommend replacing the filters. That can be done with only a small loss of fluid, so it's a fairly inexpensive maintenance item.

FWIW this isn't an oil, it is a hydraulic fluid developed for automatic transmissions. Oils are desgined to be lubricants; this isn't.

Mornin' All,
A quick question for someone. A 1992 Allison 4 speed. Has sat for ten years with no use.
The oil is nice and pink...hard to believe but it is. Should I drain and change filters? Can a guy drain the torque converter? Can this 700 be changed to a 5 speed without a major overhaul? And lastly are there internal filters?
Thanks for the help.
Don

I assume the reference to 700 means this is an HT740 transmission.
To make it a five speed requires major work. The five speed actually has an additional adapter housing, planetary and clutch that adds a low clutch. It also requires a different valve body.
You could send out the fluid to be analyzed. I'd just go ahead and change it after sitting so long. It may have condensation in the pan.
The internal filter on an HT is a screen. The main filter is external.

You cannot drain the torque converter.

We have a '98 Holiday Rambler Navigator 42' with a Cummins M11 and an Allison 6 speed automatic, 160,000 miles. The transmission shows over full since we have had it 9 years.. Should we worry? 0 problems.

How are you checking the fluid level in the transmission? If you are using the dipstick that isn't a particularly accurate way of doing it. It is preferable to use the transmission control pad when the fluid is at operating temperature.

On many Allison transmissions, holding both the up and down arrow buttons at the same time will put it into a diagnostic mode which will read out the fluid level using the format L 0N or H 0N where N is the number of quarts high or low.

Only if the transmission was ordered with the oil level sensor. It was an option at that time and not standard equipment. When my 1995 coach chassis was built by Spartan, the oil level sensor was not included. I have thought about adding one to my unit, but the programming costs just don't seem worth the trouble or cost. Over $400.00 to have the last program update seven or eight years ago.

Thanks for the fast reply. Yes I have a 740 Allison. Couldn't remember the number but glad you did. What fluid should I use? I want to change the filter soon.
My question is if I purchased a used 5 speed would there be a lot of fab work involved and do the electrical wiring controls remain the same?
Again, thanks for your time in answering some of our questions here.

TranSynd is the best oil, or one of the approved TES295 oils. Make sure it says TES295 on the container, not something like engineered to meet TES295.
The HT740 is hydro mechanical. There's no electronic controls. You'd have to shorten the driveline and fab new mounts. The 5-speed (HT754CR) requires a rear mount the four speed does not. You will also have to change the selector.
If you have an ATEC model HT741 or HT748, those are electronic. You'd have to buy an HT755 if you want a five speed. Trying to find a selector may be difficult and a new PROM chip for the ECU that has the 5-speed cal will be difficult.
You're really not gaining anything changing to the five speed. The top gear in the four and five speed models are both 1:1.
