I just received my fluid analyses from JG labs and my boron, acid, and oxidation levels are too high. The viscosity is 6.7. A fluid change was recommended.
My question is do I need to do a double drain and fill. The PO said he had transynd installed at some point but I'm not sure he did a double fill so the leftover Dexron in the system is probably toast.

IMHO if you already had Transynd in the transmission, then a single flush should be Ok. If you think about it, this next flush will be the "second flush" of the double that should have been done the first time!

Dear Tom how long should the engine run before pulling the transmission fluid for a inspection if the RV is sitting for over a week. Or should it be driven for a certain time or distance before pulling sample.

First off, WOW, its just amazing that Tom Johnson has been participating and openly sharing his knowledge in this thread for so long. Thank you!


I'm new to oil/fluid testing but after reading every one of these posts (it took me over a week, kind of like binge watching a TV show) I must admit I am hooked on testing and this is what I will be doing next year before my two year service. Heck, I might even do this on my 12 year old diesel truck.


My favorite testing lab has been bookmarked in my browser and I already know which kits and pump I need.

Since you are a brand new devotee of sample testing, I have another idea for you.

Call up JG’s office and ask if they can sell you a “sample port kit”. This is a fitting that screws into an existing threaded port low on the side of the 3000/4000 pan. This will provide you will a hot, fresh fluid sample, under pressure, using a needle/tubing probe directly into a sample bottle.

Once you install the sample valve, which stays in place, you can pull a clean sample in 5 minutes with no pump to carry, clean and fool with. The sample valve is $25-30 and the needle probes are a buck each.

I will have them do the conversion as their price is less than Brazel's and they are actually the Allison Distributor in this area.

Steven really knows these transmissions, learned a lot to including about the WTEC II...

Trans maintenance...

Tom, help please. I have an 06 silverado duramax,allison, with 345,000 miles. I am the second owner. I have no maintenance records. The truck seems to have been taken well care of by interior appearance; also has mostly highway miles. I pull a 7500 pound travel trailer.

I have heard many differing opinions on transmission maintenance. My current plans are to simply drain the pain, and add Mobile Delvac 1. I have no idea what is currently in the tranny, or when or if it has been changed. I changed the spin off filter every other motor oil change.

Is it ok to drain the tranny, and use the Mobile tranny fluid? thanks so much...

Sorry .... been under the weather for a couple of days. Feeling a little better tonight.

I'd really recommend a fluid analysis. May be that all is OK and you don't need a transmission fluid change. The guys can tell you who to use for your Allison Transmission sample. The analysis would show the condition of the fluid and the transmission and alert you if there might be any wear or contamination that might need additional follow-up. If you use the Mobil DELVAC Synthetic, make sure it has the Allison Approval Number on the container label. The Allison TES-295 Approval Number will be AN-051005
. By the way, TES stands for Transmission Engineering Specification.

If you don't want to do the analysis first, then "yes" you can drain the pan and refill the transmission with the Mobil DELVAC Synthetic ATF. Again, make sure it's the approved one and carries the TES-295 approval number. I'd recommend you change it twice to get the full benefit in case the old fluid is really worn out. Just fill the transmission to the COLD mark, drive the truck for 1/2 hour, drain and fill again and you're done.

Bottom Line: The analysis will tell you for sure. Hope this helps. If you need more, you can PM me and I'll give you my contact info.

Since were off topic of Allison. May I ask what synthetic I should use in a Chevy Venture mini van ? That’s always used regular fluid Original owner !
