Hi All

My Allison transmission takes a long time to shift out of first gear, sometimes it reaches 2300 RPMs before shift. Fluid is good. Is this normal?

Thanks Dennis

2003 Winnebago Journey CAT engine 3126B with Allison transmission.

Dennis, RPM that high before the 1>2 shift is too high. 1200>1400 on light throttle, would be normal. A few questions .
1 Is the RPM consistant with the trans/engine at operating temp ?
2 Any service records on the trans ? How is the fluid color ?
3 Do the other up- shifts occour at a lower RPM ?
4 When slowing to a stop is the down-shift,to first gear harsh ?

I had issues with the pedal hinge binding , rusted hinge from cleaning the carpets, that was causing me to use too much throttle from a stop. Make sure your pedal moves freely, clean and lube the hinge as required.

Skip,

I ust came across this post, and wonder if you might be able to give me some understanding. When coming to a stop first gear up shift is sometimes harsh, but usually only when the trans fluid is still cool. After the trans fluid warms up to normal temps the shifting is almost always smooth unless I have to brake a bit harder than nornmal.. This issue has only started to occur within the last six months. My Allison is a 3060 6 speed with lock up torgue converter coupled to a Cummins 300 ISB. The coach is a 2003 Expedition 38N.

Thanks in advance for your response.

Jim

Hi Skip

1) Yes the rpm's is consistent with the engine
2) No service records but the fluid was just changed by the dealer
3) Yes the other shifts up and down occur at lower RPM'S. And sorry my first gear is shifting at 1900 RPM's I just had the unit out on another test drive to verify the shifting and 1900 is where it shifts. After the first shift second and third happen really fast.
4)Yes when slowing the downshift to first is quite harsh. I have made an appointment with an Allison service center (the cost is being covered by the dealers 6 month warranty) to check the transmission. They will be hooking their computers up the transmission to take some readings. I will let you know what happens.

Again thanks for your assistance and advice.
