How do different oil labs compare?
I think Tom would be intersted in my post on the Cummins engin forum.
http://www.irv2.com/forums/f123/whic...ne-285854.html
I sent samples too both JG and Blackstone labs just to see how they compare.
They came back quite close. I did both engin and transmision.

Most labs use virtually the same equipment/technology to analyze the sample so results should be very similar if not identical if testing to the same criteria. Report formats may vary. Cost and service levels are usually the differences.

You would like to think that the results would be the same. But untill you have diferant labs process samples of the same oil how do you know?

Bill, In my fleet maintenance days, I used engine oil analysis on all my OTR trucks as part of the maintenance program. I used a number of different labs over time and the records and wear metal trends on individual units did not change in any appreciable way from from lab to lab when those changes were made. Don't forget, a stand alone sample is of little use unless it highlights a catastrophic problem such as fuel or coolant contamination. Wear trends and chemical concentrations over time are what tells the story of what is happening inside the engine. Why did I change oil analysis labs? I bought oil in bulk for all my shops and negotiated oil analysis into the purchase contract. Different labs used by different suppliers.

I think if you had read the post I linked to you would have picked up on the fact I am fairly knowledgeable as I managed an oil lab when in the Air Force.

And, as a former USAF Field Maintenance Supervisor, I worked very closely with the Oil Analysis Labs on different bases in support of the Jet Engine Shop. Baird Atomic and Perkin Elmer systems/technology were in use at that time, I was present when many samples were burned and analyzed. I am no novice either.

Yeah Bill, but somebody had to manage the operation and make sure the job got done. Thanks for your support of the USAF Mission. The Oil Analysis Lab personnel I worked with while on active duty were all dedicated professionals.
Meanwhile, it seems we agree on the answer to the original question. The same sample sent to different labs should produce very similar if not identical results provided the same equipment, technology, criteria and report formats are used. As is being discussed in another thread, the level of service accompanying the oil analysis is very important to the customer. I never used Blackstone or the others mentioned here but have used Analysts Inc., local private labs, labs contracted to Chevron and Mobil, local Caterpillar Equipment labs to name a few.

Don't know that this matters; but, we are proud to call ourselves a "Veteran Owned" company. I was honorably discharged in 1972.
