Well, I wish you good luck with that process, which I think will be messy at best.

How will you KNOW for sure when you're not "wasting" the TranSynd anyway? I don't know if the second time you start it up you are pumping out the old, or some of the new. Maybe someone else can confirm. Good luck.

If I do the two fluid changes, does that mean I need ~6 gallons of Transynd. Drain and refil 12 quarts, drive 30 miles, drain and refil 12 quarts. at $30/qt it feels like Im throwing away a hundred bucks

Believe me, it's worth the $100 bucks since your drain interval will be anywhere from 150,000 miles to 300,000 miles once you've completed the process. Just change the filters per Allison recommendations and top off with TranSynd. The fluid should be virtually "fill for life" depending on how much you drive. Check it for possible contamination (cooler leak, dirt, debris) once a year with an Advanced Oil Analysis Kit.

I feel your pain. On our previous mh, I had the Dex III in the Allison 1000 drained and refilled with Transynd by a dealer,(about 10-11 qts) and drove it for the season. Before winterizing, I had it drained again,(10-11 qts) and refilled with Transynd. This was an option explained to me by the dealer.

The local shop said they had Allison approved Mobil for about $10 less gallon. Is the extra money for Transynd worth it? When I asked them how much to change the fluid for me, the service rep said if I had DexIII it would cost more because they can't mix synthetic with dyno. With that info I don't know if I should do the double fluid change before or after my trip next week (800 mile round trip)

Dexron III and TES-295 approved fluids are compatible. If you mix them (first change) then you still need to follow the same change interval as the Dexron III. After the second TES-295 change you can use the longer intervals.

My bulk plant has 5gal Mobil TES-295 for ~$150, I'm going that route also.

At the risk of sounding like I am picking fly specks out of the pepper...There is NO SUCH THING as DEX III!

GM stopped approving/licensing DEX III somewhere around 2003. So what you have is petroleum product that producers package as "Meets DEX III standards". My question is who is quality controlling these claims?

As I THINK I understand this correctly. TES 295 approval for use in Allison trannys is directly controlled by Allison. If they don't approve it, the producer can't stamp it as "approved".

I suggest you need to find a more knowledgable shop. That claim simply is not true. Your least expensive solution is to do the double drain proceedure yourself, using which ever brand of TES-295 APPROVED fluid you can find, and NO the TranSynd isn't worth any more than any other brand that has the Allison approval on the label.

Regarding the price quoted by your "local shop", Castrol TranSynd sells for around $32-35.00 per gallon at "most" Allison distributors, so I question their claim of having a true TES-295 approved fluid for "about $10 less gallon". Ed

Hi, I purchased a 2004 National Dolphin 8.1 gasser with the Allison tranny, 16,000 miles on it. I have no records on tranny fluid change. I'm planning a 600 mile trip in a couple weeks. Can I switch out the fluid for the Transynd, do the trip and and then do the second change? Or is that inadvisable?

Yes that is fine. I'd change the spin on filter at the first drain remembering to move the magnet that is on the base of the filter.

Do not do a power flush.

Have you replaced all the hoses and belts on the engine?

Plugs and wires?

Clean the MAF and put in a new dry air filter.

I bought it from a dealer. They changed the oil/filter. I'm going to email them to see if they did the air filter, but i think they did. I'll also ask if they inspected hoses/belts. Plugs and wires... it only has 16,000 on the engine, is that necessary you think? Finally, sorry to reveal my newbiness, but what's the MAF?

Air filter not all that difficult to check. It's in black plastic box by pass side wheel well. Good idea to get familiar with it... just go ahead and check it.

MAF mass air flow...
Its in a housing right after the air filter.
The MAF section can / should be cleaned periodically for best performance and economy.
MAF cleaner avail in auto parts stores.spray the fine wire grid but DO NOT wipe it or even touch it.
I put clean paper towel down to give an indication of how much dirt comes off. Change towel & spray until clean.
