Does it automatically engage when the engine exhaust brake is engaged?
the manual is confusing and i had forgotten about it until we started asking all these fluid questions and i was at the allison site reading about things

Don't quite understand what you are saying concerning a hydraulic retarder. Allison transmissions do have a retarder option but it is not installed with an engine brake. The transmission retarder is used on more expensive coaches such as Prevost conversions and Foretravel.

The way to tell is to look for a small joy stick. This stick is used to adjust the level of retardation

that was easy, my book tells all about it...but no mention of how to make it turn on

My Allison book talked about it also and I thought all Allisons had it until I had a Allison dealer downloaded my specs with the serial no. The spec sheet showed no retarder.

I then became more educated when I was invited to look through a Fortravel and saw the retarder joy stick that Dons2346 mentioned, and found out just how expensive a transmission retarder is.

Alas, we don't have one...
