My Allison’s operating manual has several charts stating “Recommended Fluid and Filter Change Intervals”. The chart lists three items; a CONTROL FILTER, an INTERNAL, and LUBE/AUXILIARY. I know where the Control Filter is and had it changed at 5000 miles. But, I have no idea what the LUBE/AUXILIARY is and if my transmission even has one as it is not described on any of the diagrams. Do some of these transmissions have two external filters and the internal filter. The chart says the internal filter is only changed at overhaul but recommends 50,000 miles or 24 months for the others. So, I’m overdue based on the 24 months, and blame myself for not opening this little operators manual recently but, I’m planning on doing the filter/fluid change myself and would sure like to know what the reference to Lube/Auxiliary filter means? Thanking you,

My coach has the MH3000 tranny. The filters are next to each other. I do not know if yours is the same.

I have the MH1000 tranny, there is the internal filter that was change at 5000 by the shop and an external spin on filter I change yearly. I'm not sure if the spin on is called the lube/auxiliary or not.

Just a note, when you remove the spin on filter, watch out for the magnetic ring on the stud, don't loose it

Hi Paul,

I've been struggling with this question, too, and now have an answer. I was recently at Piedmont International Truck, Hickory, NC. They were listed at the Allison web site for Allison service in our area. I posed the filters question to Parts. Their first answer was that changing the spin off is all I need. I showed them the manual and reference to the Lube/Auxiliary filter so they called Allison.

The response from Allison was that their transmissions are built with provision for a third, Lube/Auxiliary, filter, but that the decision to use it or not is up to the chassis builder. I'm now assuming the reason I couldn't find one was I don't have one .

The Allison MD 3060, MH3000 and MH4000 have two filters a Main filter and a Lube filter. They are located in the bottom of the sump. The filters can be either 4" or 6" long and most are the 6" type. Check the dept of the sump and if it is 2", it takes a 4" filter and if the sump is 4" deep it takes a 6" filter. When you remove the filters you will lose 8 quarts of transmission fluid that must be replaced so buy 2 gallons.

Most other Allison transmissions (the 1000 and 2000 series) have only one filter and it is called the Control Main Filter. It is a spin on filter that contains a magnet that must be removed from the old filter and placed in the new filter. When you remove the filter you will lose 1 pint of fluid. If you use TranSynd it is impossible to buy 1 pint as it is sold in 1 gallon, 5 gallon and 55 gallon containers. Many people don't bother with trying to replace that 1 pint because the transmission holds either 12.7 quarts (shallow sump) or 14.8 quarts (standard sump). Being 1 pint low will not harm the transmission. Or find a friend who will give you or sell you 1 pint.

That one pint is basically the capacity of the filter, right? I've been concerned that a lot of extra fluid might drain out as it does when I remove the filter with an engine oil change, even if I have already drained the oil.

You will not lose very much just changing the spin on. I have noticed a lot of people changing internal filters on 1k-2k transmissions,Allison recommends changing the internal(suction) filter only during an overhaul of the trans. Also the pan gasket is reusable in case you just want to look inside for a debris check. A lot of dealers make a lot of money selling internal filters when all you need is the spin on.

Paul T,

Oemy carries 8oz bottles of TranSynd, the Allison Kit or one Qt bottles. Give him a call.

He can help with most questions/products about your tranny .

Good luck,
