I recently obtained my first diesel motorhome. Along the way I spent a lot of time RTFM - but maybe not fast enough. At one stop I learned how to check the transmission fluid and discovered I was 2 qts low. Reading through the Allison manual I saw discussions regarding both Transynd and Dexron III. I was unable to determine what kind of fluid I had, nor could I find Transynd at the truck stop at which I stopped. To make a long story short - I added 2 qts Dexron III. I later contacted the previous owner and found out, yes, it had Transynd. Bummer.

So the big question is - How bad did I screw up? Do I need to get that Dexron III out of there now? or can I go to a "modified" fluid change schedule and change out based on the modified schedule?

As 85Eagle said, you'll be fine. However, you won't be able to do the extended fluid change until you are back to 100% Transynd.

Thanks for the quick reply. I think I'm due for a filter change in about 6,000 miles. I'll probably have the fluid changed out then too.

If its an allison transmission I would call them on their 800 number. Always best to check with experts. I mixed mine in past coach by mistake and drove it a few months before I changed fluid. traded coach in so don't know if it was damaged.

Ipasekof:
Your transmission service requirements: My Allison: Allison Transmission
Check with Allison technical.... 1-800-252-5283

The chart shows that without 100% Transynd, change interval for the filter and the fluids reverts to 24 month/50,000 miles.
Depending on the quanity of fluid in your transmission, is that 2 quarts significant? ---
Since these transmissions used DexronIII exclusively for years, mixing the fluids would surely have less effect than running two quarts low...

If your transmission holds 20qt. you now have about 10% Dexron. By the time you replace the fluid lost during the next filter change there won't be enough Dexron left to make any difference.

Just do the math and relax.

Allison says this is after the 2nd fluid/filter change. The company also recommends NOT using the suction type of fluid removal....don't know why.

I've read a lot of threads on transynd so am I correct in that I can drain the fluid, replace the filters, add transynd and not worry about it mixing with the Dextron III that is presently in the Allison 3000 Transmission? I bought this RV from a consignment dealer and there is not a record of transmission service and I want to service it soon. Or do you guys recommend Mobil 1 synthetic, Amsol or some other synthetic? I expect put about 12-15000 miles on it a year and the Allison warranty is not an issue.
Thanks Bob

There is no problem whatsoever mixing Dexron III and Transynd.

Transynd and similar synthetic tranny fluids are a substantial plus, though. I'd switch to Transynd or Amsoil or Mobile 1 at the next chage. Note, though, that it is difficult to remove all the old fluid from a transmission, so you won't be approaching 100% synthetic until after the second fluid change.

When you can't find transynd, you can use any of these Allison approved fluids

I use the Allison filter with the Amsoil Torque-Drive® Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid.

Just a heads up...If your under warranty, I'd make sure to use a fluid that's on Allison's list even though others are just as good...If anything ever happened, you know how companies try to get out of things...

1Ciderdog. When I switched my 3060 over to transynd, I had to do two changes. After about a year with the first change, I had the second change done. According to the Allison people, you don't get the full benefits of transynd until the second change because so much dexron is left in the transmission when the first change is done. I can now go by the transynd service recommendations.
