Operating temp?

What the normal operating temp for allison 3000. Have 19 discovery with cummins 360.
Have had a small drip from the transmission cooler under engine for couple months. Havent been close to freightliner shop. Will be in 2 weeks.
Very small drip but on way down to savannah i noticed tranny temp on dash at 185, highest it went. Is this too high.
And where is the dip stick to check the level

Normal temp is 185-195° when driving on level ground. Normal temp on grades can go as high as 220° for a short time and be ok.

There is a way to check the fluid level using the shifter. The link explains it pretty good

make sure the trans temp is over 160-165° before checking with the pad for it to read the level correctly.

Hooked up a Scan Gauge II this spring to monitor trans temp among other things. On average, my trans temp runs about 90 - 100 degrees above the incoming air temp during the day. This is based on 1k miles in May between east TN and the Florida panhandle, 900 miles in July from east TN and Hilton Head Island and 4.5k miles between east TN and southern UT between late August and late Oct.

If you have a water to oil cooler, the trans temp will generally follow the water temp. Cooler is OK. Max temps for the Allison is 250F in the sump and 300F to the cooler. A retarder model can go to 330F to the cooler intermittently while using the output retarder. It helps to know where your vehicle is reading the transmission fluid temp. Sump, to cooler, from cooler. If it's using the Allison reading on J1939 that's sump (inside the transmission) temp.

That's how mine acts on flat ground. Even in the 6% grades it seems to be approx the same. I read the tranny temp from the only sensor I have access to on the outside of the tranny.
