Replacing trans filter?

Hi all,
We bought our coach new last March, and have the Allison 2500 MH trans. I have around 5000 miles or perhaps a little more on it. I have not had a chance to have the filter changed all winter. We are planning to leave on a month long trip end of March and it is still snowing here. I see where the trans filter should be replaced at 5000 miles. Can I go longer than that and not hurt anything? I will probably put another 3000 miles or so on it before I can get back and get the filter changed.

Thank you for your help.
Chuck

If it's recommended to change the filter at 5000 miles, to not do so might be a warranty issue. The spin on filter is very simple to do, you might do it just to keep warranty good. Do it yourself and keep the receipt for the new filter.

Very easy job to change that filter, little or no fluid loss. I prefill my replacement filter when I change mine. Be careful of the magnet, don’t Lose it, clean it and make sure you reinstall it properly. If you have an Allison Manual with your coach, the procedure is fully explained. Use the correct fluid if you need to add any.

Thank you both for your help! Looks like a simple enough job. I will get it done before our next trip.

Just watch for the magnet that looks like a flat washer. Must be wiped clean and reused on replacement filter.

The initial change of the external filter on the 1K/2K hasn't been required since about 2011. If you look at the latest revision of the Allison information it's not in there. You can also use the fluid/filter calculator on Allison's website to see the requirements for your transmission. More than likely, the information that came with the vehicle is out of date, which is not uncommon. Allison publishes a lot of updates and it can be quite a job keeping up sometimes if you're in the vehicle business.

You're not hurting anything if you want to change the filter, but it's not required. The official by golly Allison term for that filter is the control main filter.

The 2500mh Allison spin on filter holds about a half quart of fluid. I think they all come from the factory with TES 295 fluid. Not hard to find.
