I have the Allison 1000 trans. We now have just over 30K and I was thinking of changing the trans oil and filter. If I want to stay with the Dexron the equal product now would by Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF correct? I can't see paying the extra for the transyd being I'm doing it myself and it would require me to do it twice. The extra amount of $$$$ just doesn't compute at this time and the Mobil is a synthetic anyway. I would assume from what I've read that nothing would be damaged. Correct?

Steve N Sal,

If you're not going to use TranSynd (or another one of the TES-295 licensed products), then you need to purchase a TES-389 licensed product in order to protect your seals. You can find the TES-389 approved fluids list at https://fdlrd.swri.org/Allison/Appro...List.aspx?Id=2. Mobil 1 Synthetic is "not on the list".

You're really dollars ahead with TranSynd (or another one of the TES-295 licensed products) because you wouldn't have to change it for 150,000 miles once it was installed. You'll need to change a DEXRON-III or TES-389 fluid about every 25,000. So, you'll change 6 times vs. 1 time with the TranSYnd or TES-295 product. It's more economical to change to the better fluid.

You can send me a PM on this if you'd like.

I don't plan on keeping my MH for another 150,000 miles so it wouldn't be that cost effective. I have 30,000 on mine now and most likely won't put anothe 60,000 miles on it before trading or upgrading.

I buy DEXRON III at Costco. That's one of the few places I could find it.
I've stayed with DEXRON III only.
I've done about four changes so far and I'm going to TranSynd on the next change.

I change the little spin-on filter each time also. There is a magnetic on the spin-on that needs to be removed from the old filter and placed on the new one.

I use a bucket with quart measuring lines built into the side. I measure the amount drained and put that exact amount back in. That way I'm close and fine tune from there.

Arch:
If you'd have gone to TranSynd to begin with you wouldn't have had to do the last two changes!

HI,

Who told you that you have to change Dextron III at 25,000 miles?

I have an Allison 1000 and am changing my fluid at 50K and will be using Dextron III just like it has in it along with the filter.

Most automatic transmissions will go 50K on the fluid that is in there unless you are having a problem. I even tow with my Rv and don't have a problem with the tranny plus I check it everytime a fuel up.

If my tranny was supposed to have Trans Syn then it would have come with it and since it had dextron III then I will put that back in.

Good Luck!

TOM-NC: Here is a link to the current edition of the Allison guide: http://www.allisontransmission.com/s...t=SA5429EN.pdf

On page 3 I think, there is a chart. It shows Dexron III quality fluids (they are now called TES-389 ) used in the 1000 & 2000 series trannys like we have in our WCC chassis should be changed at 50,000 mi. OR 2,000 hours OR 24 months, WCF. This recommendation is for "general" duty, NOT severe duty. I leave it to you to decide if a 24,000 lb. MH towing a car IS severe......I really don't know, but think it might be severe especially if mountain driving was involved.

Regardless, if you have not yet reached 50,000 miles and done a fluid change, it seems to me that you are "past due" based on their 24 months recommendation.

FWIW, I don't think TranSynd was even available when your tranny was built, and I know that WCC did not include TranSynd as standard fluid until April 6, 2005, so I'm sure you are right about what came in yours. However, I don't agree that is a valid argument for not using something better once it is available..........

If you can find one of the tes-389 fluids to replace your Dexron III, and change it every 2 years as they recommend, it will need to be less than half the cost of TranSynd (currently around $32.00/gal) just to break even, not counting the labor and hassel factors. I put TranSynd in my 2003 W-22 way back when it had ~25,000 miles and never regretted that decision. It was still "goin & blowin" when I sold it at 98K last year.

Safe travels to you!
Ed

I have done a fluid change on a Alison 1000 on my dads Chevy silverado and I have never seen a magnet on the filter. Are you sure?

The magnet looks like a flat washer, and should have been on top of the old filter when removed, however sometimes it will stick at the top of the threaded "spindle" that the filter screws on to. You need to wipe it clean and re-use the original 'cause you don't get a new one with the new filter.

ninos: that happens frequently. If you want to buy a replacement here is a link which includes a picture of the magnet: Oemy's Web Site - Oemy's Product Catalog

You may also find one at a Chevy/GMC dealership, or an Allison distributor. Ed

Who here is old enough to remember the Fram ads where the mechanic used to say "You can pay me now, or you can pay me later"?
