Switch to Transynd

Yesterday I started my change to Transynd. When I drained my Allison 3000 MH tranny I only got 10 qts. I thought something was wrong because I expected 19 qts. I got the Allison Owners Manual out to see that I have a 2" sump and this tranny only needs 10.5 qts to refill. I just thought I should post this info because I don't remember reading anything about a 2" sump on a 3000 tranny. I will say it saved me $ 180.00 for Transynd I won't be using.

Switch to Transynd

sportcoach 1,

When I switched my 1998 HR Endeavor to Transynd about one year ago, I also found out that my RV has the 2" sump. I later read somewhere that this arrangement is pretty common on older HR DP models.

Note that the sump only contain about 1/2-2/3 of the tranny fluid - the torque converter is still full of the old fluid. And if you were changing from dino fluid to synthetic, you haven't actually accomplished that until you drive the coach a bit and do another fluid change, which will then get you up to something like 85% synthetic fluid.

You might want to check. According to Allison in Service Tip #1099H,

4 in sump initial fill 29 qt, refill 19 qt.

2 in sump initial fill 26 qt, refill 17 qt.

1000/2000 series are 7.6 qt shallow sump, 10.6 qt standard sump.

Pretty common to use the "short" pan in a MH due to the lack of ground clearance.

Just finished changing my 3060 with a 2 inch sump. Drained 16+ quarts including draining the filters, replaced filters and filled with 17 quarts to get the electronic check to say OK.

As Gary RVRoamer said. You haven't fully converted to transynd yet. When I changed my fluid over, the Allison shop told me to drive it a season, come back and change the fluid one more time. After that, you have a high enough concentration of transynd to start following the Allison transynd fluid and filter change recommendations.

I have a few questions about tha fluid change over, and I hope Mr. Transynd might be able to help. I did the first drain and filter change (both filters) I only drained a little over 10 qts. I looked at my Allison Manual and on page 40 the chart says that a 3000MH with 2" filters needs only 10.5 qts to refill. Now that I am doing my second change, would I be better to drain it in March after it sat all winter and get the 10.5 qts plus the fluid from the TC? I know the fluid will be cold but over time it should drain. The chart says the initial fill is 19 quarts. I hope someone can help. Thanks

i changed it today, got 3 gallons out so refilled 3 gallons. after warming up rechecked, the level was good. I am not sure why Allison says 17q with filter changes.

My Allison manual states 19 qt. initial fill and 10.5 qt. refill for 2" sump on a 3000.

Changed mine yesterday on the 99 Endeavor with MD3060 2 inch sump. Drained 16 quarts and added 16 quarts. Electronic level check showed 2qts low, OK, then 2qts low on three checks within a short time. Going to leave it and recheck next time I drive it. May take time to settle down?? I have an extra gal of transynd if needed.

My manual shows the same quantities as wirelessenab post:
4 in sump initial fill 29 qt, refill 19 qt.
2 in sump initial fill 26 qt, refill 17 qt.

Interesting. I copied this from my Allison PDF:
Refill Transmission.
The amount of refill fluid is less than the amount used for the
initial fill. Fluid remains in the external circuits and transmission cavities after
draining the transmission. After refill, check the fluid level.

Table 6. Transmission Fluid Capacity
Initial Fill* Refill*
Transmission Sump Liters Quarts Liters Quarts
3000 MH / MD 3060 4 inch 24.5 26 18 19
3000 MH / MD 3060 2 inch 18 19 10 10.5
4000 MH / HD 4060 4 inch 45 48 37 39
4000 MH / HD 4060 2 inch 38 40 30 31
* Approximate quantity, does not include external lines and cooler hose.

i'm always unclear why allison manual specified capacity is different than how much i could drain out. i did the second fluid change yesterday using vacuum from dipstick tube, i got out 2 gallons (if i'd use drain plug i might have taken out 2.5g, but not a big difference anyway). after refilling the same amount, i drove 30 miles and measured by both dipstick and pad, it was good (pad shows "olok").
by the way, the extracted fluid is good, i would say still better than regular dexronii being sold in parts stores, as it has at least 50% synthetic in it. i am putting it into the emptied containers for my car usage down the road.
