i am planning on changing my 5sp trans fluid from dex3 to amsoil tes295 fluid. in reading this forum and the wh manual i understand that the pan holds about 10.6 qts and the filter holds .5 qts. how much fluid does the torque converter and the trans cooler hold? can you remove the return line from the trans cooler to the trans to change the fluid in the converter and cooler by turning the engine over with the starter? i see from the forum that most folks just change the fluid and filter twice. that would probably only change 80% to 90% of the fluid, depending on how much the torque converter and the cooler holds.

UPDATE: per allison, the 5 sp ally holds 14.1 qts on rebuild.
i left my moho sit unused for 3 weeks and drained 13.5 qts from it.
i got about 95% of the fluid changed.
i installed AMSOIL tes295 synthetic torque drive fluid.
i got the new spin on filter from oemy. i moved the magnet from the old filter to the new one. the magnet was clean.

Sounds like your Allison was performing great on OEM tranny oil. Hope your synth oil does as well.

Well, the edit function timed-out while locating the Allison Transmissionwebsite. Visit, click on publications, select your model A/T, and you may download service manuals along with much more.

Dan,

When I changed from dyno tranny oil to transynd, the Allison service center in Kent WA drained the tranny added transynd to full then disconnected the cooler output line, then ran the engine in gear until transynd came out.
They then assured me that it was 100% transynd and no other changes were necessary to get to 100%.

For what it's worth.

How did they determine when the Transynd came out....the color, or?

Thanks, Jeff

Mine also set for about three weeks and I got 11 quarts out of it. I use amsoil oil and transmission fluid in everything except the transmission in my motorhome. The reason is because their tests on their fluid compared with transynd showed very very little difference. So I thought why use it if it is not better.
