Took the MH in yesterday to a WH SC for the brake recall. While there, I will have them change the fluid in my Allison 1000 from Dex III to Transynd. My understanding of this process is they will drain the old out,(about 11-12 qts), throught a drain plug and refill. The same drain/fill will be done a second time after driving how many miles? Is there any filter/filters that need to be changed at the first drain/refill?

The way I understand it - at least for an M3000 transmission - you change the Dexron III with Transynd twice using the normal Dexron III schedule. After the second drain/fill, you can then use the Transynd schedule. It takes two drain/fills to get all the Dexron out of the transmission and torque converter.
BTW - I hear you and Dale have been talking..... so much for sealed lips ;-) He is parked right next to me here at Bruning Lake.
Hope you guys had a Happy Thanksgiving and do have a Merry Christmas

RanD:
Sorry about that as I thought you guys had already been to a rally with the updated item or it wouldn't have been mentioned. You and your bride also have a Merry Xmas. See you next year at some of the rallies.

To make the switch to the synthetic tranny fluid, you need to change the filters and drain the sump and then fill with the new fluid. Then following the Dextron III schedule, you do this again. After that you follow the schedule for the synthetic fluid changes which is 3 years or mileage -- whichever comes first. The schedule for the Dextron III is annually or 15,000 miles -- whichever comes first. I have the 4 inch sump on my M3000 MH tranny and when I change out filters and drain from the plug, it uses 19 quarts to refill. Of course that does not drain the torque converter or the fluid in the cooler lines. A complete "do over" for mine is 26 quarts.

I just did that on a MH 3000. My recommendations:
1.) Dont accept suggestions or opinions on change intervals, GO TO ALLISON. Its CRITICAL. Their website lists all the fluid change intervals. Best I recall, Allisons documentation is 150,000 miles on tranSynd on a 3000, but check for yours
2.) Dont use TranSynd unless you intend to USE it, unless you actually plan to put that many miles on it. Otherwise the cost is wasted if you only drive 15,000 a year because the 4 year interval makes 60,000 miles and thats only half (or so) of the fluid life.
Fluid and filter changes are NOT just about the fluid, they are to remove debris, chemical contamination and change the filter element which ages, can crack and can lose whatever chemicals the filter paper is impregnated with. they arent just paper. Realize what ONE metal fragment in a filter can do with pressure pulsations, can CUT through the element like a knife.
This is especially critical in engines where chemical attack destroys the oil when the vehicle is in storage. Generac, for example, requires the oil to be drained if in storage for a couple weeks. The chemicals in the oil can actually attack the bearings in an engine (sulfuric acid in particular from sulfur in the fuel)
Ask ALLISON what the change interval for mixed fluids is, they may not have one. Id personally look for a drain plug in the converter. Maybe there is an access cover to a drain plug?

Allison does not endorse the use of Dextron VI and Dextron III is no longer made as Allision pulled the license for the manufacturer of it so the only fluid available that meets Allison's requirements is a TES 295 fluid (TranSynd, Delvac -- Allison has posted a full listing of the fluids meeting the TES 295 requirements)
The actual maintance schedule per Allison for mixed fluid is 1 year, 25,000 miles or 1,000 hours of operation --- that is posted on their web site in the operating manual covering the Allison 3000MH.
On their web site, for the 3000 running full synthetic, they state that the filter change is 3 years, 75,000 miles, or 3,000 hours of operation. At 4 years, 150,000 miles or 4,000 hours of operation, a full change is stated.
All of the above are stated for regular service and not for severe operation ---- under severe operation, the times, mileage, and hours are lower.
Allison does not recommend removing the fluid from the torque converter during any change --- they actually state "that flushing machines are not recommended or endorsed."
The change cycle that I posted in my earlier post is Allison's recommended procedure to change from non-synthetic fluid to synthetic fluid.
The operating manual can be downloaded from their site -- I carry a PDF copy of the manual with me on my computer.

David is spot on. Allison's service intervals are based on mileage or time, which ever comes first.
Here's the link: Allison Transmission

The trick to getting the fluid out of the converter is to overfill your trans, disconnect the cooler return line and place it in a bucket, start the engine and let it pump about a gallon of fluid through, then reconnect and adjust the fluid level.
