Transmission Error / Stop Engine Msg.

2011 Freightliner XC with Cummins ISC and Allison 3000.

ONLY when first starting out for the day, msg display tosses transmission error, and usually but not always soon after, a stop engine msg. Turn off engine and restart - all is ok. May happen a couple three times in succession, but usually only once.

NEVER occurs during the travel day. Only when first starting out for the day.

Interestingly. If camped for a day or two, very seldom occurs. If camped for several days / a week, almost always happens.

You can usually, but not always, tell when it is going to occur. The engine can be felt to hesitate coming off idle.

Been to two Allison shops. Transmission code is a 'communications error'. Wiring onnections from transmission to engine have been inspected. Transmission firmware has been updated. Fluid (Transynd) and filter have been changed. Transmission diagnostics show no issue and in good condition.

Engine codes show only an occational TPS error. But doesn't have direct correlation to transmission error occurances.

Thoughts or suggestions?

The communication error means the transmission isn't getting date from the engine. Wiring for the data link has been checked - that's good. The engine may have a glitch in its wiring that causes an interrupt in it's broadcast on the data link.
The occasional engine TPS code also points to the engine system.

The engine sometimes hesitates. That's definitely not the transmission.

I'd stop looking at the transmission and start looking at the engine and its associated wiring.
This doesn't sound like something a shop is likely to know what it is immediately, but I can suggest it's likely not to be found in the transmission system.

Thanks. I have discussed with the shops if it could be an engine issue initiating the comms failure. Their suggestion was to let Freightliner go through all the wiring. Since the error cannot be replicated it's a crap shoot - easily spending many hours / $$$ and not fix. Since once it's ok, it will run for the entire day with multiple stops and restarts without issue I'm not convinced it's a wiring / connection issue. I'm on the other end if the country from Gaffney, else I would take it there.

Frustrating...
